Gamec0cks5 Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 What brand of oils/greases do you use for your BC reels? I've been using Ardent Reel Butter, and Abu Garcia Reel Oil. Do you use oil on the main gear or grease? I would think grease since it would stick better. But I am not sure. I want to keep my BCs to run as smooth as the day I bought em. I have the hardest times getting apart my Shimano Sahara 2500 I can never to get to the main gear Quote
ejtaylor822 Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Quantum hot sauce grease and oil. All I have ever used. Grease on the gears and mating surfaces and oil everywhere else. Quote

RWSCHMITZ Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Hot Sauce Oil on Bearings and Hot Sauce Grease on the gears, 1-2 drops of oil for each bearing and a light coat of grease on the gears. Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted May 20, 2010 Super User Posted May 20, 2010 I thoroughly clean all of my part's first using an automotive mass air flow cleaner and then I use Penn synthetic lube's on all of my reel's gears and 3 in 1 sewing machine oil on all of my bearings. I want to clearify that I am using a non toxic application and only on the removed part's not on the body. I use Dawn (non detergent) soap and water for the body and covers. Quote
Pikesnogle Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Call me crazy but I spray WD40 on all surfaces, then use my air compressor with a small nozzle and GENTLY blow the reel completely clean. WD40 is an EXCELLENT cleaning agent as it breaks down grease and oil. I do this to rid my reel completely of all the dirt that comes with catching big ones (yea right - big ones). Then I grease the main gear and use 3 in 1 on bearings and such. -Snogle Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 We're using Super-Lube grease on gears, TG's Yellow Rocket Fuel on bearings and Reel Ex on pivot points and sliding surfaces. I'm using automotive gear lube on the level wind. It stays put better than light oil and doesn't gum up like grease in an exposed application like that. Quote
tennwalkinghorse Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 I have had the best luck using the oil and grease that Dave (Reel Mechanic ) sells. Holds up really well,I have used reel butter bearing oil all so, but going apples to apples I get more distance from Dave's oil and don,t have to lube as much. As for grease in my opinion reel butter grease breaks down. Hot Sauce just makes to much of a mess ,but the oil is very good I believe it was made to us in the PT bearings, very thin need to re lube more often. Just my two cents. Quote
Gamec0cks5 Posted May 20, 2010 Author Posted May 20, 2010 SO grease on main gear and oil on everything else? I have used REEL X in the past and have loved it, I need to get another bottle of it. It is just time for the seasonal maintenance for these reels Thanks Guys for all your suggestions! Keep Em' Coming!!! Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted May 20, 2010 Super User Posted May 20, 2010 Be sure you note small amount of grease on the gears otherwise it will be just like casting with the brake fully applied. Quote

The petroleum distillates used to make the oil in WD-40 spray-able is why it cuts grease. I don't recommend this due to the inability to control where the spray goes. You don't want this anywhere near your bearings. There is no substitute for a complete tear-down when cleaning a reel. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 20, 2010 Super User Posted May 20, 2010 Personal opinions on reel lubricants are fun discussions. The best is the one you've used. Someone else has a completely different idea of what the best is. A pro will know what works, where, and in what circumstances. No one lube strategy works for everything. Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted May 20, 2010 Super User Posted May 20, 2010 Totally agree!!!! But I think it should be on what not to use, That could be a little more fun. Quote
BassCats Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 I did testing on oils and grease while in the Army. Slip2000 oils, lubricants are the best I found TW25 is the best grease I could find. I use both on my weapons and on my reels. Quote
