The Bassinator Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 I just got an ugly stick because I wanted a more durable rod. I don't mind the weight and the sensitivity is fine for me. I was wondering if it was compatible with braid though. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted May 10, 2010 Super User Posted May 10, 2010 Shouldn't be a problem at all. 8-) 1 Quote
The Rooster Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 I believe Ugly Stiks have aluminum oxide guides unless it's the Lite version. 1 Quote
bwell Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 You'll be fine, one of the combos I use is loaded with braid and I have never had a problem with it. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 Braid, or another low stretch line would probably compliment the generally soft action of the Ugly Stick. 1 Quote

bassin is addicting Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 I believe Ugly Stiks have aluminum oxide guides unless it's the Lite version. what about the LITE version?? is it ok to use braid?? Quote
MattinOK Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 The Lite version uses stainless guides. Really, since it is only $40 I would use the fire out of it for a year or so, and then go buy another if I wore the guides out. 2 Quote
The Bassinator Posted May 12, 2010 Author Posted May 12, 2010 Thanks a lot everybody! I dont really use braid but its nice to know that it wont damage the guides. Maybe I should go out and get some braid though Quote
kikstand454 Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 ive been using braided line on my ugly sticks for saltwater for like 5 years now.. maybe longer. no problems whatsoever. i agree that it does help with the "generally soft action". its a good combination. Quote
triglet Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 no problems from me with braid on an ugly stick. been doing it for years now. but i think im getting old cause the weight is starting to wear on my wrist. im slowly trying to switch to a lighter rod. Quote

Demon Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Whats the best Braid to use on a rod rating 15-30 lb? Quote
Super User Bankc Posted August 30, 2023 Super User Posted August 30, 2023 17 hours ago, Demon said: Whats the best Braid to use on a rod rating 15-30 lb? It depends more on what kind of reel you're using and what kinds of lures you're using. If you're using a baitcaster, I wouldn't go below 30# braid, as the thinner braids can dig into the spool and create backlashes. On a spinning reel, this isn't really an issue. If you're throwing finesse style baits, you might want a lighter line than if you're throwing power style baits. The idea being that you'll get better action on lighter line, which is also harder for the fish to see. But a thicker line is less likely to break. I honestly have no idea what the line rating on a rod is for. The lure weight rating, speed, and action are all I pay attention to. As for brand, I don't think it matters much. I've used a bunch of different brands of braid over the years, and they've all worked for me. There are differences between the various brands, and after you've fished a long time, you might develop a personal preference. But braid is pretty safe in that most any brand you find will work. 1 Quote
MAN Posted August 30, 2023 Posted August 30, 2023 I have no issues with braid through mine. Heard they are bringing back the "ugly" Ugly Stik. Always thought that was a ill-thought out decision to revamp that series. Quote
