Lower end St. Croix rods

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what the difference between the Triumph, Mojo Bass, and Premier rods by St.Croix are.  They are all made from the same blank, but cost $70, $100, and $120 respectively.

I'm told the material is what determines sensitivity, so will they all feel the same?  I like the split grip of the Mojo, but really like the tapered cork of the Premier.  But I'm not sure I'm willing to spend and extra $20 for the grip if there isn't improved sensitivity as well.  The Mojo appears to have better reinforced guides, but I don't know if that would contribute to sensitivity better or worse, or not at all.

Which would you buy?

There's already a thread going about the mojo's.  I have heard not so good things about the Triumphs and Premiere's.

I've been reading the thread on the Mojo Bass rods.  I'm more interested in whether it's worth paying extra for the Premier.  Or if I should even just save my money and buy a Triumph.

I had a premier spinning rod for quite some time and liked it but definitely can't go wrong w/ the Avid for just a tad little more.

I have a premiere and a mojo. I like them both, but I prefer the handle on the premiere. I use the mojo spinnerbait rod so sensitivity is not a huge deal because with fast moving baits there aren't really any subtle nibbles. Same with the premiere, I use it for shallow cranks, wake baits and jerkbaits.

I live in Canada, and it's not the same small jump from the premiere to the avid for us. I believe in the US it is a $50 jump, here it is a $100 jump. >

In this instance, I'd buy the mojo, or save a little more and get the avid over the premiere. The avid will have a lifetime warranty with it.

I have a Premier...good rod.  Love it. Mojo's are over rated. Never used one...just hear say from some users.

The AC68MXF is an outstanding rod and GREAT value!

The AC68MXF is one of my favorite rods. Great for weightless plastics, lipless cranks! The Avid's grip is shaped to form to your hand not just a stright tube. I never felt like it wanted to slip from my hand even when launching large baits.

Like Roadwarrior said, you'd be better off waiting and browsing the flea market for a Avid or a Shimano Crucial.  They will run you about $90-110.  I do like the St. Croix Premier rods, though.  I think a person would be hard pressed to find a better rod that retails for $100 or less.  I'll pass on the Mojos and the Triumphs.  I don't know why those 3 St. Croix rod series feel and react so differently since they are allegedly built on the same blanks, but the only one out of those 3 worth buying is the Premier.  I'd say it's on par with the Avid as being excellent values in their respective retail price ranges of $100 and $180.

While the Premier is a decent stick, for the price, the Shimano Compre is better IMO.  If it weren't for the guide problems many seem to have (I haven't had these problems) I wouldn't hesitate to label my Premiers as the toughest, most durable rods I've owned.  They can certainly handle absurd amounts of abuse/neglect and I've never heard about anyone breaking them.  If you can find what you need in the Cabela's Fish Eagle II series, these will match any performance aspect of a Premier and save you about $30+.  My single biggest gripe with my Premiers is the balance (on casting models) is too tip heavy.

I agree with RW, catch a deal on a used Avid. IF you've got to buy new, a Premier is a good choice. Bought mine for finesse spinning 5 years, and it's been great.

Never took to the Mojos, everyone I've ever picked up felt like a broomstick to me.

My first "good" rod was a Premier medium power spinning rod that I bought in 2003.  I used and abused it until I upgraded to a Techna AV over this winter.  The Premier (now my son's) is still in real good shape. 

Having said that, if I just spent a few dollars more on an Avid way back when, I'd probably still be using it.

Thanx for telling me about the flea market, though.  I didn't know about it.  I'll be looking for deals there next time I'm in the market for a new rod and/or reel.  My next rod will likely be an Avid--or a GLoomis.

I couldn't have helped in your choice as I haven't fished any of these. I can only say I think you picked the better rod. I liked the feel and looks of the Premiers, but didn't care for either of the other two. Just a personal preference.

BAD IDEA!!!! Unless you've got plenty of money to burn. Lots of good stuff comes up for sale. A person hardly knows which one to buy first. So he buys them all. ;) ;D ;D
