Super User retiredbosn Posted April 28, 2010 Super User Posted April 28, 2010 I broke my crankin stick a couple of weeks ago. I picked up a MH Mojo Moderate action. Talk about a dead stick!!!! I can't feel a thing through the rod, no vibrations make it to the reel seat. Compared to my cheapo BPS Crankin stick, the Mojo down right sucks. I was fishing Rapala DT 20 and Bomber Fat Free shads in about 15 feet of water and I never felt the action of the bait or even when it hit bottom. You can't even feel a double colorado blade through this rod. I was/am amazed how crappy this rod is. I'm taking the rod back. Quote
lightsout Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 there are definetely better options out there. I own the 7 M fast and in addition to the tipheaviness and lack of sensitivity Ive had issues with guide inserts falling out twice. I am blown away by the falcon bucoo, not sure off the top of my head if a crankin model is in that line up. The 7H and an E7 feel PERFECT together., and the sensitivity is far superior. Quote

I was never impressed by the mojos, I thought about getting one but never did, they just didn't feel right in store. There are plenty of other options though, personally I'd stick with the Crankin Sticks. Quote
s13john Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 i got the 7ft plastics rod mf action ... defiantly better ones out their Quote

Super User islandbass Posted April 28, 2010 Super User Posted April 28, 2010 Wow, that's not good, but I didn't think too highly of them either and that's just too bad since they look kind of cool. What line and #test were you using? I noticed that even with different mono and strengths of line, I noticed different feedback for the same rod and reel when cranking. As a rule of thumb, the lighter # test (monos) I went, the more feedback I seemed to get from the wiggle of the crank or jerk bait. And this difference was very noticeable even between 8# (great at giving feedback) 10# (okay at giving feedback). Testing out 30# braid was sensitvity overload for my hands. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted April 28, 2010 Author Super User Posted April 28, 2010 line was Yozuri Hybrid 10lb, reel Curado E5, I've used this combo line and reel before with great sensation, but I am very disappointed with the rod. Quote
FishinBama Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 I think mojo's are real tip heavy, but maybe thats just me. Quote
Pantera61 Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 If you are throwing deep cranks exclusively, you may want to consider the Vendetta 7', medium/moderate. Same price range and a reasonable warranty. Quote
backpain... Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 Get a Kistler Carbon Steel 7' Med and never look back! I got a few over the winter. I took it out a few weeks back and could feel every vibration of a rattle trap in a 20mph wind with 30mph gusts. got 5 largies on a day when I probably shouldn't have even tried to fish in my 14' tin boat back in early April. I hooked one fish when I simply felt the vibration stop. Set the hook and there he was a little 11" buck bass. I could also feel every thump of the spinner bait on the MH as well. They get my vote for the price point any day of the week. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted April 28, 2010 Super User Posted April 28, 2010 Given what you're using, dang! It's gotta to be the rod. I imagine that 10# hybrid would do well at providing feedback. I've only used 12# without issue with cranks. Quote
jhow2319 Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 I've had the guide inserts fall out also. I purchased the Mojo last summer and returned it after the tip had a piece off of it, which was probably due to shipping or w/e. I exchanged it for the same Mojo and within two times on the water, my guide insert fell out. I returned it and then exchanged it for a Shimano Compre which is about the same price. Shimano has a lifetime warranty. This was a great exchange because I haven't had a single problem with the Compre yet. I was very disappointed with St. Croix. I have a 7 ft - Medium Crankbait Avid that I had before the Mojo and I love it. It's one of the best rod's I've used. I haven't ever had a problem with it. I guess the difference in craftsmanship of a $100 rod, and a $180 rod is huge. I haven't bought a St. Croix since the Mojo let me down. If I were to purchase another it'd be another avid or something that is on the higher end of their rods. Quote
BassThumb Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 I think mojo's are real tip heavy, but maybe thats just me. Nope, that's a common theme. Mojos are a real black eye on an otherwise great rod manufacturer. Quote
Wormman Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 I am glad I read this before I ordered one. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 28, 2010 Super User Posted April 28, 2010 Well, even though I'm a HUGE fan, St. Croix's low end has had other problems, too. The first Triumphs were a joke. Some say they are fine now given the pricing point, I don't really know. At any rate, Avid and up are great rods. I consider the Avid series a "Best Value". I also have two Legend Elite, at least on par with Loomis IMX. 8-) Quote
DWG1984 Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 I have two mojos, that Ive used for about a year with absolutly no problems. In fact I like the rods alot, maby I just got lucky and got the only good ones in the batch. Quote
FishinTN Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 I have a mojo for wormin, and I have had no problems, and like it quite a bit for the price range. Quote

The first one I bought was the jig/worm model and I liked it so much that I've bought several others since. I have no complaints with them and I love the split bottom grips. Quote
Bassin_mizzou Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 I have the wormin n jiggin rod too and I haven't had any problems with it. Quote
fishingfourfun Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Say it isn't so. I just bought the jig n worm, spinnerbait, crankbait and flipping rods paired with Revo STX's! Quote
jj2 Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 I have 4 of them and really like them alot I had a fifth the pitchin model I lost a insert out of the 1'st guide when I sent it back I upgraded to a legend tournament bass it is alot more sensitive than the mojo was but it was also $140 more Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Mojos are not very sensitive at all........................ Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted April 29, 2010 Author Super User Posted April 29, 2010 I took it to the local tackle shop, their suggestion was to send it back to St. Croix. He wanted me to do the vocal chord test, I started low and went higher, all he did was look at me in amazement, no vibration through the rod. I lost the darn reciept, so I may be stuck with it. I am guessing that I got a bad blank, it happens I guess. Hoping the replacement is better. Quote

I am guessing that I got a bad blank, it happens I guess. Hoping the replacement is better. I had a similar experience with a 6'10" MH/XF Johnny Morris Signature Series casting rod. It was just a dead stick. No vibration at all. It was like fishing with heavy gloves or mittens. The 6'6" MH spinning rod in the same line was fantastic, though. Wound up bringing it back to BPS and exchanging it towards and Avid. Quote
