Fireline Crystal first superline for me....

So i finally decided to try a better line than mono....I have always used Stren Sensation....but figured I would give superline a try.

I purchased the Fireline Crystal and relled a 1/3 of the spool on my Pflueger President with Stren Sensation and the rest with the Fireline.  Should I run a Fluoro leader?

Any other thoughts?

What weight line did you get?

Many run fluoro leaders on here and if so I'd recommend the Alberto knot.  Many don't.  I would recommend you get used to it first (so no leader) and then experiment with a leader later.  Braid/fusions take a bit to get used to, however it was love at first cast for me.  Others can't stand the stuff.

Fireline has its place. I use it for small river fishing where theres a lot of snags. Its great for dragging hogs out of cover and unsnagging your trebles (have straightened several hooks where other lines would have broken).

That being said...

Fireline Crystal is VERY visible to fish. I use the black original with no leader. works ok in dirty water. I don't use it in gin clear water.

It does fray if dragged across logs, rocks, etc.

It has decent abrasion resistance, but this is due to (I think) it's inherent strength. It can stand to lose a few strands and still be stronger than most lines.

It does NOT tie well to fluoro. Especially with an alberto knot.

It is noisy in rod guides. I believe that some of that noise is transmitted DOWN the line to the lure (and fish).

If you don't have your drag set right and you snag a log or a hog and think you're gonna get a little tough with it, you WILL break your rod. (don't ask me how I know this) :-X

and finally, it makes great dental floss.

Always use a leader unless your slop fishing or in murky water. Fluoro leader for everything but topwaters, and a low vis mono for your topwaters. Don't forget to put on about 20 yards of mono backing first though.

Superlines are best for the following applications:

Hard Jerkbaits

Froggin'

Heavy Cover Flippin' and pitchin'

Getting extra depth from your crankbaits

Superline excels for those jobs. Anything else though and mono gets the call for me. I am a power pro guy though all the way, it just handles, casts, and lasts better than fireline.

This is a 32"-36" Tiger Musky I caught using Fireline Crystal.  Yeah, it's a bit noisy through the guides and a bit on the rough side but it works.  Well.

I've heard this said by a lot of people. The same people that criticize anyone for using Vanish flurocarbon. I've been using both since they came out on the market and have no bad experiences to show for it. Sorry, but your opinion doesn't wash. But you are entitled to it.

That being said, all braids are very susceptible to abrasion. Always use a fluorocarbon leader of some kind with any braid - unless your fishing slop on top. Fluorocarbon lines are very abrasion resistant, as well as being less visible in the water; although I'm not convinced that visibility has anything to do with success or failures.

Add about a 7' - 8' section to the main line. This works well for me. Connect the two lines with an Albright knot and you'll be good to go. This connection will flow through your guides much better than the typically advocated Uni-Uni knots, in my opinion.
