How much braid do you spool on a batcaster?

Recently began switching over my casting reels from mono to braid. Have experienced an increase in backlashes, not sure why.  But it seems that I may be spooling too much line on the reels that is causing an increase in backlash problems?

I spool the line to about 1/32 inch from the edge of the spool.  What do you guys spool to??? And is this really a factor in avoiding backlashes?

I've been using baitcasters for almost 30 years and just recently switched to braid.  A little less line might help.  I actually thought braid was more forgiving to me as far as backlashes go.  Had to tinker with the cast control a little though.

I fill mine up to within a 1/16 th..no problems..I use 55lb braid, light braid will backlash easier imho, the key is your Thumb. Also different brands behave differently, my braid is really limp, no wax..and cast's pretty well.

All reels should only be spooled to within 1/8" of the spool lip or a little less. If you have the manual for it, it should state just that.

I use mine for frogs and punching through grass mats. I have about 1/2 of the spool filled with mono backing and I have the braid about 1/8" down from the top.

Abu Garcia manual says 1/16 inch from spool edge.

I guess it would really depend on what kind of bats your going after.

I use 30-50lb braid to fill up the spool to about half way on my Abu 5000s, this allows me to top it off with 80 to 100 yards of 10 and 12lb Berkley BigGame mono. I'd use dacron backing but braid is a lot cheaper.

new2BC4bass, yes you are partically correct. Of the couple dozen baitcast manuals I have, two of them do state 1/16". The rest state 1/8" or 3mm and some of them are Abu.

I am not partially correct in what my manual says. However, I only have the one Abu manual. I'll take your word for it because I know you have a lot more reels (and thus manuals) to look at than I do. It would seem that even Abu isn't positive on how much to spool. Or else there are other things that work to determine the amount.

My Fuego paper doesn't show anything. I can't read Japanese, but if they mention it, they don't show an example for my Alphas reel. That's the extent of my paper work. I am in the process of trying to catch up to you, but that will never happen due to lack of $$$ on my end. :'( If I win the lottery, my reel collection will fly right by yours. Hehe. ;D

I can tell you that I overfilled my Fuegos (according to the Abu manual), but so far I have not had any line problems. I suppose that could change once they've seen more use, and the line gets a bit older. What say you?

I fill my reels about 85%, about 1/8 from the top. Also braid line must be as tight as U can get it on the spool, at the end of the day I will let out all the line and reel line as tight as I can for the next day.
