reel drag/gear grease?

so one of my citica's is starting to run rough. i was planning on doing the cleaning myself (or try at least) and picking up a set of carbontex washers, bearings and grease from *. where he has the shimano drag grease , it says it is not gear grease..

which one is it? i do have some penn reel grease i can always use, but i was curious why he would say not to use it on gears.

Hey sqhertz, If you go back to that PDF and re-read they tell you the lubrication's used. Not that the drag grease is used on the gears, in fact they don't mention gears in that PDF until you get into (Heavy Duty Maintenance) on reels that have been exposed to salt water or submerged in saltwater.

The Shimano drag grease has a very high viscosity, and tack. This alone would make it to thick for gears in a normal clean and lube for freshwater reels and will affect the reels performance...For saltwater reels and reels that are serviced and setup for salt I can see using the drag grease sparingly...

i see where it says for reels in saltwater but figured it would be the same for fresh. i didnt realize its that much of a higher viscosity.

I bought some Diawa grease today, as my reels are getting kinda dry. On the little sqeeze bottle, it says for gears, and drag...It's that blue grease, I was in a pinch and used it rather than risk damage. Oh, I used on my bps extreme..kinda reluctant to use it on my Chronarch..

If your retrieve is rough it isn't because the drag needs service.  But the main and pinion gears do, so you might as well do both jobs at once.  Shimano Ace 2 Drag Grease is a thick sticky cosmoline grease for fiber drag washers and it's what you should use on them - not regular grease.  With regular grease, a fiber drag system gets jerky pretty quickly.  If you go with Carbontex washers, they don't need grease but a light film of grease is OK.  For the main gear and other general grease needs, I like Superlube grease.  It's a white PTFE bearing grease sold at auto supply stores including NAPA and it works great (several good reel shops use and recommend it).  Now, all this may fix your problem or it may not.  I bet your reel needs 100% disassembly, cleaning, and lubrication.  Other sources of rough retrieve can be the levelwind system and the instant anti-reverse bearing.  If you aren't comfortable taking apart a reel, consider sending it to a pro for cleaning and lube.  If you want to do it yourself, get a reel diagram, take it apart on a towel so the small parts won't "wander off".  And lay parts out in groups as you take them off so getting it back together won't be a puzzle.  Getting the job done and using a reel that works great again is its own reward.

the reel feels 'geary' on the retrieve and with the drag all the way loose , there is still resistance.  i have another citica i can compare to and feel pretty confident about it. i would like to be able to service my own reels, it could save me a few bucks.
