Berkley Fireline, Original or Crystal

Hello all,

Newbie here. I recently upgraded my fishing gear and one of the things I wanted to change was my line. I bought a few spools of Berkleys Fireline, original and crystal. I have found that the crystal is more visible under water than I expected and that the smoke is seemingly less visible. Has anyone else come to this conclusion or am I just imagining things? Thanks. :-?

Havent fished crystal but fish the original a lot when fishing heavy cover.  Love the stuff.  You can throw it on a spinning reel and still make long casts.  It's smooth as butter and the 30# is only 10# Mono diameter so it's just sweet.

The Crystal variety is white. This is far less visible to fish looking upward, toward the lighted water surface. This is another reason why dark colored surface lures work well. They are silhouetted better against the sky and become easy targets. Think of it from a fish eye's point of view....not your point of view.

I've use the Crystal since it came out and really like it.

See, I told you I was a newbie. Thats a very good point about seeing the line from the bottom up. It makes perfect sense. My wife always tells me that I only see my point of view especially when it comes to fishing HA!

someone suggested i try fireline on my small diameter spinning reel (abu 801). ive tried powerpro and got massive amounts of windknots from using a thin diameter line and it being too soft. so i gave up on it.

how do you guys think this would compare to that? iirc , the reel is rated for 110 yards of 6#.

I've used 2/6 and now 3/8 fireline on my 2000 size spinning reel for years. If you look on the long braid thread now on the page, there is some good info there. I don't have issues with wind knots except at night when I can't see.

I've only used Crystal in very light line techniques and it seems like it likes to split apart or frey? Never had that problem with original. Maybe just a bad batch?

I spooled up some crystal on two spinning reels prior to a Fl. salt water trip. I experienced the same thing Dave described. I won't use it again. OTOH, I've had the same original FL on my Frog rig (baitcaster) for close to 10 years. I wouldn't switch it out for all the tea in China.

In clear water, there may be some advantage to crystal, but if line visibility was an issue, I'd be tying a fluorocarbon leader to my original FL.
