powell and dobyns

Noticed a lot of people have been talking about these rods. I have never used one and we don't have anywhere around here that carries them. Wondering what you guys thought about them and whether or not it would be worth getting one. I mainly need it for cranks, senkos, and texas rigs. Thanks

Powell rods are very good rods and are difficult to beat at their price point.  Gary Dobyns, who was initially involved in the design of Powell's bass rods, improved on the Powell designs when he started his own company, Dobyns.  Since that time, he has developed multiple rod line-ups with increasing quality, and, hence, higher prices.  You can't go wrong with either of these rod brands at their price points, in my opinion.

I used my first Powell rod two weeks ago and it's great!  The quality is comparable to some of my expensive rods.

I've been on the St. Croix and G. Loomis bandwagon for years, but I'm very, very impressed with the Dobyns Champion Series rods, the only Dobyns rods that I've tried. They're light, powerful, sensitive, well balanced, and I love the feel overall. My next rods will all be Dobyns until I find a better rod for the price.

Many people rave about both of these brands. I wonder how different they really are, considering who designed them. I've heard that the Powell and G1 Dobyns Champion are on par, with the G2 Dobyns Champion being a significant improvement over both.

The dobyns rods are better balanced, and higher quality, hence the price... They are incredible rods though, and well worth it. Smaller guides, better balances, more sensitive, very well worth the additional money.

705 Glass Crankin rod is great for cranking, 734 is one hell of a senko and t-rig rod.

Since they're in the same price class, how do you feel Powell rods compare to Dobyns Savvy Series rods?

Right now there's no Savvy Cranking rods. BUT there's no comparison in my mind with the Savvy Rods and Powell. The Savvy rods are far better balanced (major weak point in the Powell rods), and the quality is incredible. I only have one Savvy, it's a 735, but I've held a Powell 735 and it's an easy decision.

  The Savvy series are the real deal.

I have four powells and they are great!  They are very sensitive.

While I agree that the Dobyns rods are better than Powells I believe the balance issue is blown out of proportion. I would call it a minor weak point, not a major weak point. Dobyns rods are better, but, in my opinion, most people will see a moderate difference, not a tremendous difference. I compare my Powells to my G.loomis MBR844c GLX and while the GLX is better it is not so huge as to pretend there is no need for comparison.

What length are your powell rods? 7ft and under there's only a minor difference. But there is a night and day difference between a 7'6 - 8ft Powell and a 7'6-8ft Dobyns. Better balancing rods truly do help with fatigue, although some may not have issues with that.

I've never used a powell rod before but one of my friends is a field staffer for Dobyn's and i've tried several of his champion rods.  i'm pretty much blown away by the balance and outright crisp feeling of the champion series rods. i would not hesitate to spend that kind of money for those rods.

That's an excellent point, David, and one that I was thinking about this afternoon but I've been so busy I just got back on the forum.  My Powells are 6'8" and 7'0" so I would think the longer rods would experience more of an issue with any imbalance.
