rookiesmallmouther Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 on those long days of fishing how do you guys keep your reels and rods clean? i have had reels break because of long days of fishing. also what about fishing line? after a while of fishing my line has gone from clear to dirty brown and also has been frayed and weakened<---- i was fishing at a river cliff fishing and regular fishing in the brightness of the sun last sunday..... how do i clean my line and other equipment that was used? what to use and how to clean is another way to put it another thing to ask is if i should have my g.loomis rods restored. i seen on craigslist a guy posting his ad that he restores rods by removing the guides and such off stripping the hole entire rod and rebuilding it for 40 bucks for a g.loomis rod... mines have gone through a lot of wear and tear i have 2 spinning rods with the outside parts of the guides get the black coating scraped and chipped off and the epoxy coat finish whatever it is have little single air bubbles (very few) and some scrapes that the finish can be picked off plus all around hard use and very dirty cork handles plus one of the rods have a different tip top guide since the original one had a chip in the inside that cause the line to get frayed when reeling. Skinnyh2ofishin Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 Well, I can't say I've had my gear get all that dirty during a single trip, I regularly clean my gear between trips. I fish in saltwater often as well as my bass fishing so keeping things clean has become a habit for me. For extensive reel cleaning, do a search on reel cleaning and I'm sure you'll find copious results in the "rods, reels, and line" sub-forum. As for regular cleaning between freshwater trips, I've been using Penn Rod and Reel Cleaner on Q-tips to clean the guides and exterior of reels. I'll also use a slightly damp cloth with or without a little of the Penn cleaner added to completely wipe down the rods and handles. This is usually enough to keep the line flowing smoothly and the rods looking pretty. I'll add a drop of oil to the important lube points (bearings, worm gear on bc's, line roller/guide, handles). As for your line getting gummed up and dirty while fishing, you must be fishing some very dirty water. You could carry a cloth with you and either a cleaner like I already mentioned or just some extra water, make as long a cast as you can and wrap and hold the cloth around the line in front of the reel while you reel in. It's only a little basic stuff, but hope it helps. Quote

If you have a reel break during a trip than you must be using some cheap equipment or extremely rough on your gear. I grease/oil my reels every season. florida strain Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 I wipe the dust off my rods, reels with a damp cloth , and use q-tips in hard to reach spots. If my line is brown and frayed and weak, I change it. I lube my reels when i change line. Quote

I don't think so. i had 2 reels break on trips and restored as in like replacing guides and new coats of finish from a rod builder. the line being frayed must be from the rocks from cliff fishing the line feels like its gone through sand paper. maineman Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 Turtle wax ice. Up till this year all my rods were cheap ones from wall mart, But they still look brand new. Just a coat or two a year will work. The new Turtle wax ice leaves no white residue on plastic,black finishes, or white billed up in crevices. Work on your car too! ;D Quote
northern basser Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 There is some stuff in in silver tin called Never Dull. It is a rockwool like material with an oily substance in it. Its usually by the car wax and polishing section in the store. On the can it states that it is great for polishing and cleaning a wide variety of surfaces, metals, chrome and fishing equipment. After using this product you just go over it again with a clean dry cloth. Works great for me. An occasional drop of oil in your worm gear is a must for baitcasters also. Lastly, IMO if you don't have a sealed rod box in your boat your reels should have covers on them. Gravel road dust is great for destroying reel bearings and gears. Quote

I'd be a little leary of this offer. It can definetly be done and since G. Loomis is no longer offering blanks to custom builders, it may be worthwhile. To do this right is a lot of work. $40 sounds almost too good to be true. Just check it out before you commit. Quote

rookiesmallmouther Posted April 23, 2010 Author Posted April 23, 2010 g.loomis warranty! wen i have the cash i will send in my old rods for new ones 50 bucks a rod all worth while since it is a G.loomis and thanks to those that answered nicely.... i think my reels have been through over use and so much use and wear has depleted them of lasting... buy some decent cheap reels take care of it as well as my new G.loomis rods and i wil be set for another 10-20 years to come Quote
