Baitcasting line

Well, I am soon to get a baitcaster, A shimano combo at my local tackle shop, Now I need to find a good line, I have heard allot about braid. I want to use it as my jig, spinnerbait, frog, ETC rod. What kind of line do you think. And if I choose braid, do I need a flouro leader?

If this is your first time using a baitcast reel and you're about to learn, unless you have money to burn, braid is not the best line to learn with. The first time I tried braid was the first time I ever tried my first lp casting reel (old greenie curado). I didn't know anything and didn't realize all the brakes were off. Fully spooled with braid, I made my first cast.  It was the most glorious bird's nest I ever made and I wasted an entire spool of braid with one cast. It was the fastest $14 I ever spent on one spool.  ;D

pick a mono from 10-14 # and stick with it until you master the mechanics.

Given that you're going with a Shimano reel, you will be learn really quickly. Even the least mechanically adept persons have a chance with Shimano reels. They truly spoil the angler in terms of ease.

for line , i would go with trilene big game. its cheap , good on a bait caster and its everywhere.

X 3..I would suggest trilene XL, only because it's pretty managable, and cheap. Once you get the hang of the baitcaster, then you might try braid, but it has a completely different set of problems compared to mono, and fluro..plus as was said, most of the braids are not cheap. Mine runs about 40.00 for 300 yds. compared to the trilene at about 10 % of that.

Also, re: braid, works great for jigs and frog type baits, don't really think you need it for spinnerbaits though. And JFYI, some do use leaders, usually if the water is really clear..

I'm just learning to use a baitcasting reel. I went with 12 lb. Suffix Elite to learn on, and it will be staying on my cranking rod. I would say from the research I've done, that sticking with a softer mono to learn on is the best way to go. Elite over Siege, XL over XT, etc. It should flow off the reel easier, and provide more distance for us beginners. We all know that distance shouldn't be what we are trying for at the beginning, but we can't seem to help ourselves. ;D :

The tougher lines seem to be harder and have a tendency to 'spring' off the reel. Or so I have read.

I do have braid set up on another rod for jigs and worms. I've cast it a few times. Is easier to get backlashes with it if not careful. At least it is for me.

x2, I wasted my brand new spool of braid on my brand new STX On the "last" cast of the day, that I just had to make. Braid/Fluro can be expensive. I reccomend like 14 #. mono, such as Trilene.

I like Stren line.  It's pretty cheap, and does the trick.

Mono ain't "it". Try a spool of Yo-Zuri Hybrid #12.

yozuri 12 or 15lb!!

the bigger the line... the easier it is to pick out backlashes.

although... the harder it is to get good distance.

if youre not down with yozuri i would use 12lb berkley big game. its a really good really cheap mono.

if your getting it spooled at the tackle shop , ask the guy behind the counter what he has that is decent and CHEAP !!! after you get the hang of the reel and are ready to go fishing , get it spooled up with one of the better lines ( in this post , alot of good lines have been mentioned ) pick one and see how you like it
