adclem Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 I am looking at getting a crank bait rod for lipless cranks and shallow to medium diving crank baits and am looking for some advice as to what power and action rod I am going to need to get. Thanks, Quote
aarogb Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 Quantum Tour KVD crankbait rod. Get the 7'4" version, I think its the most versitile. http://www.***.com/Quantum_Tour_KVD_Casting_Rods/descpage-QKVDC.html Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 IMO a Med-Hvy/Mod would probably be the most versatile if this will be your only crank bait set up. Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted April 5, 2010 Super User Posted April 5, 2010 I've got a few different makes of Crank rod, they all share 2 things in common: 7' or over, and all are MH/Mod. The one thing you need to look for in a crankbait rod is that last designation. If you want to spend around $150, that's not a bad rod, but I'd also encourage you to look at the Avid AVC70MHM for $30 more. Another option that I'd throw out there is the Cumara Reaction series. I've currently got 3 in the Reaction series and I love them. (Specifically the CUC70MH) Quote

BobP Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 Power Medium to Medium Heavy, Action Moderate to Fast. You want something with a somewhat soft tip section but decent backbone. Length, brand and model is player's choice. I vary length depending on the cover - shorter rods for close-in situations where accuracy is prime, long rods for long casts in open water. You also have to decide on graphite versus fiberglass versus composite. A friend of mine who can afford any stick he likes loves inexpensive BassPro Crankin's Sticks. I favor a 6 1/2' graphite Rogue MB664 custom. There are lots of choices and price points available. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 5, 2010 Super User Posted April 5, 2010 St. Croix: AVC70MM for most smaller, shallow divers AVC70MHM for larger baits, and lipless in rocky cover LTB70MF for lipless in grass Quote

Hooked_On_Bass Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 Maybe: Loomis CBR843C or Loomis CBR803DF Or, if more power is needed, move up to their 4/5 power variants. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted April 5, 2010 Super User Posted April 5, 2010 Cumara Reaction CUC70M Crucial CRC-C70M Quantum Tour KVD TKVD745M (good for crankbaits, a little on the soft side for lipless IMO, esp. if you're fishing grass). Quote
Diablos Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 I know Lamiglas kinda flies under the radar but people don't know that most Lamiglas blanks that are classified as fast action actually have a more moderate action than comparable blanks. It's kind of their signature. I don't have a dedicated crank rod yet but all my saltwater fishing is done with Lami's and I always think to my self how good of a crank rod some of light saltwater blanks would make. Don't sleep on these. http://www.***.com/Lamiglas_Certified_Pro_Fiberglass_Casting_Rod/descpage-LCPROFG.html Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted April 6, 2010 Super User Posted April 6, 2010 as for power and action , you want a medium powered rod with a moderate fast action , meaning it will flex through the upper third of the rod to keep pressure on the fish with out pulling hooks out . if you think you might be throwing deeper diving baits or heavier baits than 1/2 oz. , i would look into a medium heavy powered rod with the same moderate fast action . as for brands , that is up to your preference , find one that is light and has a good backbone . as for length , i like longer rods for crankbaits and lipless crankbaits . if you are roll casting (side arm/low trajectory casting) you would want a 6'6" rod , if you are throwing in open water , i would choose at least a 7' rod ( i like them 7'6" or longer , i get longer casts and more rod to fight the fish ) . there are many rods out there that are good cranking rods , shop around and handle as many as you can before you buy . good luck and hope you find a good one Quote
adclem Posted April 6, 2010 Author Posted April 6, 2010 Thanks for all the help, greatly appreciated. Going to BPS in the morning to check some out and then to Cabelas at lunch to see some more. Do you really need to use a 5:4.1 reel for fishing cranks? Or will a 6:4.1 work? Buying a new reel to go with the new rod. Later, Quote
bmadd Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 I use nothing less than a 6.3:1 ratio. I know a lot of people fish with the 5.4s but I really like to dig and crash my crankbaits with some speed. Quote
Incheon Basser Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Any of the designated crank rods out there are great. If it were me though I would buy the Damiki 7'6" crank model. but if it's out of your budget then you should really look into the 7' MH Bucoo. it's super sensitive and yet the taper is perfect for cranking... they list it as a fast action rod on their web site but it really is a Mod/Fast . Here is a picture to prove it.. Tell me thats not a Mod to Mod/fast Rod Quote
Incheon Basser Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 I take that back about their web site they have changed it (probably due to feed back on the rod) They now call it a trap caster which is what it's good at... They also have a 7'6" M now for cranking too Quote
Nicky.YYZ Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 G Loomis crankbait series. I own the 7'Med Power Moderate Act. That thing is sweet! Quote
gabes Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 I bought a Skeet Reese 7' crankbait rod on a whim and really like it. Throws rattletraps and Wiggle Warts like a rocket and has a great tapered flex. Hard to beat for $89. Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted April 8, 2010 Super User Posted April 8, 2010 Cumara Reaction CUC70MCrucial CRC-C70M Quantum Tour KVD TKVD745M (good for crankbaits, a little on the soft side for lipless IMO, esp. if you're fishing grass). I've been curious about the Reaction sticks. Cranks have always been my bread-and-butter, and the last few years it seems like I've gotten away from them. This season I am going focus much more on crankbaits. Anywho, what's about max for the 7M Reaction? Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted April 8, 2010 Super User Posted April 8, 2010 About as much as I want to throw on the CUC70M is a DT10, or Mini MR. It handles those types of baits very well, without feeling like you're in too deep for the rod. It will also fish Shad Raps and Fat Raps very well. I've thrown a few lipless baits on it, but wouldn't want to get in the grass with it. Quote
dude loves to fish Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 Medium with a mod-fast (or fast) tip. I use the Kistler Micro Magnesium 7'. Quote
