Treating myself to a finesse spinning set-up, need some advice...

I recently came into a nice little bonus through a hockey pool I entered and won, and I decided that if I won I'd treat myself to a little something special.

I have rods and reels, both spinning and baitcasting, for pretty much every situation.

The one thing I don't have is a premium spinning combo for my finesse fishing.

I'm leaning towards the Stradic CI4, but I'm not sure if I should go for the 1000 or the 2500 (do I really need the extra line capacity vs. the weight trade-off for finesse?)

I'm really lost on the rod selection though... I want something really sensitive and light, this will be a trophy combo for winning that pool!

A G Loomis GLX BSR852 and a Shimano Stradic CI4 2500 would be quite a reward for winning that hockey poll.

thats exactly what i would get. havent tried the CI4 but i love my BSR852 glx.

if you dont want to sell off a child and get the glx, check out the St. Croix Avid 6'8" mxf. i have the LE version and its a great rod.

Shimano Stradic CI4. 2500-size may be better if your using fluorocarbon, especially. With the 1000-size, you'll only be able to put up to 6lb line on it and fluorocarbon would be a hassle to deal with.

Shimano Cumara Spinning Rod, 7'2" MED XTRA-FAST would be a great finesse rod. These sale for $199.

You could go less expensive but that Stradic/Cumara combo would be light as heck!

It 's not about the line capacity, it 's about the line being wrapped over a larger surface, about having larger drag pads, anout having a larger, more responsive and fluid drag, about having less line memory, less coiling, larger diameter coils. That 's what it 's all about when it comes to line management, just beacuse it 's for finesse doesn 't have to be tiny.

One of the best finesse rods I've used at any price is the Shimano Crucial 6'8" dropshot rod.  Really light tip but strong enough down the blank to handle any bass, sometimes referred to as a "hinged" action.  I pair mine with a Japanese market Shimano Biomaster 2500.

I would not consider AVS68 MXF a "finess" rod (I own it). It has to much power for that ; I think it's a bit toward MH, especially if you compare it with a Loomis rod (I don't own any , but i plaied with them , comparatively, in the store).

IMO, a more "finess" aproach would be AVS69MLXF, or AVS 70MLF.

Or, try a Techna AV 70MLF (it's a $220 rod on clearance), for about $115 at FFO.

The reel should be 2500 size

This rod is much more "stout" than the numbers indicate. I use mine for t-rigged soft plastics and small jigs in light cover instead of my MH baitcast setups.

I would go with the AVS69MLXF over the AVS70MLF, but that's just me. I prefer rods in the 6'8" to 6'10" range for most applications.

too much power for a finesse rod? why wouldnt you want a little power while finesse fishing?

it really all depends on what kind of finesse presentations you want to use it for...

this is what i use mine for:

les68mxf - finesse jigs, shakey head, light t-rig, small senkos

avs69mlxf - light dropshot

Shimano CI4 hooked up with the new Kistler z bone. This is a great setup. The new micro guides are the best.
