Treble Hook Rod---St Croix Bass Mojo Crankbait rod, St Croix Permier, others?

Hey all,

I am going with a spinning, baitcaster, treble hook setup as advised by Roadwarrior and others.

If I understand it correctly, in order to avoid putting excessive pressure on the tiny hooks of treble hooks, it is preferable to have a rod that gives a lot so you can keep pressure on the fish but you don't yank the hooks out.

For this i was thinking I would go with a Moderate action rod. Medium Heavy perhaps?

I already have a Bass Mojo, 7' MH, Fast action. It's their spinnerbait rod but I think that it is also great for jigs and heavier soft plastics.

I was thinking that because I like this one, I might as well get the Crankbait rod but I haven't really heard anything about it. I have also heard that you want fiberglass for this moderate action purpose?

I need help and opinions. I want to spend about $100. Maybe $120 if I can find something extremely better than at the $100 level.

I will continue to read reviews but hope to get some first hand info/opinions from the community.

Over the winter I picked up a 6'6" med/mod St Croix Premier Crankbait rod (graphite) and put an E7 on it. Use it for shallow cranks and jerkbait. Launches a minus 1 a mile.

This morning from my kayak I got 4 pickeral on it with the minus 1. Strong enough to pull those in and not throw the hooks. Using 12lb CX.

I have the Mojo 7' MHM Crankbait rod. I love it for cranks! I wanted to use it for jerkbaits, but I fish from the bank mostly so a shorter rod is ideal. The best value rod for 100 I've purchased yet!

IMO, generally the premier and avid blanks are labeled a bit faster than they actually are. The mojo is pretty much a premier blank and with that I would say that a 7'mhm premier or avid is a good crankin' rod.

The St. Croix Premier and Avid moderate action rods make for nice rods for treble hooked lures.  The medium power is quite light and is more suitable for small cranks and balsa poppers, so you might want to consider a medium heavy power, moderate action instead, depending on the weight of the lures you wish to throw with it.

I recently had the same decision to make.  I have the Mojo 7' MHF for spinnerbaits and I really like it.  I added a 7'2" MHMF Crucial for deep cranks and then was left with a tough decision for jerkbaits.  I compared the Mojo jerkbait/top water rod with the Premiere 6'6" MM.  I chose the Premiere and it was a great choice.  I'd stick with a bit of a shorter rod for jerkbaits because it makes it easier to work them.  The Mojo is a 6'6" MF and is more ideal for topwaters.
