Supertuning a REVO STX

So I just picked up a 2010 Revo STX HS A few days ago and so far I like it but I am was looking to get a little bit more performance out of it.  So today I sent it off to Mike @ Delaware Valley Tackle to see what he could do to it. 

  I know we are putting in Orange seals and Carbontex Washers and some polishing.  Has anyone ever done similar upgrades to this reel and if so how much of an improvement am I looking at??

 

also on a side note dealing with mike at DVT has been great so far!  I cant wait to see what he can do to this reel

nothing against Mike but IMO the bearings are a waste of money in that reel. the Revo series really responds to a professional clean and lube. from what i understand the Revo series also comes with a very good stock drag system. im curious to know what is changed performance wise with new washers.

I recently had some reels cleaned and worked on.  My local reel guy recommended I supertune my Zillions but strongly recommended NOT to do anything to my STXs since the stock bearings and drag are good and there's not much to polish (his words, not mine )

got it back it was still an Abbadabbado!

If it ain't broke don't fix it. I see "super tuning" as a waste of money. It's amazing how people can be asking questions on here one week and a pro the next. :

I have three Revo series reels, and I can say the only thing I would do is upgrade the drag in the premier from the one of the STX.  Other than that, a good clean to get all the assembly gunk out of there and get some better grease and oil.

IMPO everyone should go read and re-read Jeff Nielsen' article until you truly understand what a super tune is and what reels benefit from them.

super tunning a baitcaster is the best upgrade you can do to get the most out of your reel , as far as the upgrade for ABU Revo drag , it is for the smoothness of the drag , not more drag strength , Revo's (minus the older Premier and Skeet Reese) have more than enough drag strength ;

btw, i am also having Mike (delaware valley tackle , one of the site sponsors ) super tune my Revo SX followed by him doing my Inshore and Toro 51 . mike has always answered my questions and concerns , very pleasent to talk to . another thing is he has always taken my call promtly , every time .

get your reels to him soon , he is gonna be really busy as more people send him work , he sure is gonna get mine

The upgrade to the drag is for the smoothness like stated above.  I am not sure if it will make any difference but for only 10.00 more its worth the shot. 

   As for the bearings getting changed to Orange seals I think its worth it from what I saw with a curado that I put them in to last time. 

  This time I am going to have DVT leave the seals off.

If all goes well with this service from Delaware Valley Tackle I am going to ship him both My Pixy (pixzilla)and my Alphas R-edition.

Thank you for the endorsement! My goal is always for my service to exceed expectations. As you can see, the replies to your thread for the most part echo my sentiments from our recent conversation. The Revo's respond especially well to a proper cleaning and lube and probably doesn't need a full blown super tune. We will, as always, thoroughly inspect the entire reel and make recommendation before performing any additional work. Also, the STX has a much better drag in many opinions than the Premier, but some still prefer the Carbontex washers over stock and they are relatively inexpensive. As for bearings, you have experience with the OS Ceramics and know what you are getting. I'm happy to install them for you.

Some of us are tackle enthusiasts as much as if not more than fishermen. Does a new STX need different bearings? No. Does a new Corvette need an aftermarket exhaust? No. But some do it. To each his own.

maybe this is a stupid question but whats the difference between an Orange Seal bearing minus the orange seal and the Boca ABEC #7 bearing?

alot of people leave the orange seal off of the bearing because they are a pain to put back on without it rubbing . Boca now has a stainless sheild that is easier to put back on so you will be finding more people having the "seal" put on after servicing . as far as the ABEC 7 bearing , they are steel bearings , the regular Orange Seals are ceramic and they make a distinct whine which some don't like . if i ever change out my spool bearings , i will go with the ABEC 7 steel bearings ..........
