ultralight setup

whats a good setup that dosnt cost to much for an ultralight because my current ugly stick shakespeare setup is just messing up to much.

Under $100 gets you a Pflueger Trion 4725GX reel and hook it up with a BPS Micro Lite series rod. I recommend a 6' or longer rod as casting distance will be much greater.

The Pflueger Trion is a bulletproof little reel. Research it and read the reviews. Mine is going on it's third season of hard use and it's been flawless (annual cleaning and lube of course) The Micro Lite is a decent rod. It's certainly no St. Croix, but for $45 it's tough to beat.

My biggest thing on UL rods (having sold tackle for 15 years) is to make sure people get the longest rod they can in their price range. This will certainly result in them using and enjoying the rod for a larger range of fishing situations. I use a 7' St. Croix Avid UL ($180) a lot and its the ticket for sure! In the 100$ range you can get a 7' St. Croix Premier and thats what I would get if I were on a budget.

i honestly believe that $180 for an ultralight is to much.  in my eyes ultra lights should be cheap but thats because i dont use them alot.  avids are nice, i own 1 for jigs.  but thats overkill i think lol.

I would argue the opposite is true.  Nice rods are more important in ULs than any other power since the cheaper ones are whippy noodles and essentially useless for casting any distance with accuracy.  A decent rod paired with a decent reel and good line opens up new territory for UL fishing effectively.

i can see your point being very true for someone who fishes UL a good amount.  but as i dont and am just getting it mainly to catch baitfish when catfishing i dont need a super nice one.

For around $50 this is what I would recommend. A plfhueger trion ul version with a -gasp- Shakespeare micro lite (I think that is the name) These are the only combo's my grandpa and I use, and with braided line you can feel a crappie bite in 30+ feet of water. Hope this helps>

if your only using to catch bait on go with a BPS Micro Elite Spinning reel on a BPS Graphite Series or Microlite depending on how much you want to spend.

Micro-Lites are O.K., but if you want to get serious with UL, look at what's offered by the B n' M company. They have a Sam Heaton Super Sensitive 7' spinning rod for about $50. that is a real crackerjack. One of the best UL rods I've ever used.

The BPS Micro-Lites are a great value however. You can get them on sale for about $29. if you pick it up at one of their stores.

I've got that same reel right now on a 6'0" St CRoix Avid UL, and really like the setup.

I have a couple Trion/MicroLite combos and they're actually pretty nice for the money. I have the 8'6" Float-n-Fly model paired with a Trion 4735 and a 7' med-lite paired with a 4730 for general panfish use.

I bought the F&F model towards the end of the season so I haven't had an opportunity to try it out but the 7' ML is a blast. It's more "whippy" than I expected from a ML, almost like fiberglass, and will really sling an 1/8 oz lure. It's last year's model and I found it on the clearance rack at BPS for about $25, I believe. Still not really sure why I bought it since I rarely chase panfish, but it's fun to use so I guess I'll keep it for a while.
