HeadHunter13 Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 JUst watched the Elite series tournament on Clear Lake. That was not a Duckett rod that Velvick used for his swimbait. Looked like a G.Loomis to me. I'm so sick of all the crap. Even Tackle Tour had a article about him winning with a duckett rod. BullCrap... And when espn puts up the graphic for what he used it even said Duckett Fishing Rod. BullCrap on top of BullCrap. Enough allready!!!!!!! :-/ Quote
Indianafishstick Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 Actually it looked like a Rogue to me.....but yea def dont think it was a Duckett. Quote
Fat-G Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 Agreed. I think it was a G. Loomis. Either way, he won. Quote
Dockhead Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 He did appear to have Duckett's on the deck. Didn't see him use anything but the one that appeared to be "different" however. I am curious as to what the rod really was. Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 Okay, you peaked my interest. I watched the show and the rod Velvick used appears to be a Rogue as far as the graphics go but it could be a custom rod. I did note some goofy white rods on the boat deck. Not enough to see to determine for me. Evidence demands a verdict. The best part of the show was Guy Eaker placing 3rd. The man has been doing this for a long long time. I'm impressed. Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted April 4, 2010 Super User Posted April 4, 2010 a couple of guys already said it , the rod he was fishing with that little swimbait was a Rogue , for guys that know those rods , check out the cork , dead giveaway : , for Boyd Duckett to use this for his advertising is ridiculous , what a shame ........... Quote
River_angler Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 He was using a Duckett rod.....actually he was using the 7'10" one. They are just not available yet. sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/bassmaster/fishingtips/news/story?page=b_FT_MS_Velvick_Swimbait8 Quote

One of these tournaments would exhaust most guys on this board...my hats off to this man. T Quote
BassThumb Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 Good point, Tbird. I was thinking the same this when I was reading Eaker's bio. This is nothing new, Headhunter. Pros fish with whatever gives them the best chance to win. They fish with one rod, then plug another because that's what pays their mortgage. There are staged photo ops with guys holding fish with lures hanging suspiciously from the fishes mouth, right next to that lures sponsor patch. Frankly, it doesn't bother me. I ignore that stuff. Thats the business. Quote
WCCT Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 It was a Rogue. He helped design that rod a few years back. Quote
L a r r y Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 Would it have mattered if he had in his hand a limb from a willow tree, with a shoestring and a paperclip for a hook. I am more passionate about watching someone catch a big fish rather than what is in their hands or what lure is at the end of their line. Just me Quote

JWR075 Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 After reading the TackleTog blog, no where did it say he used Boyd's rods exclusively. It said He may not have been using these sticks exclusively, after all, the new Micro Magic swimbait sticks are still in prototype stages, but Velvick tells us the rods are very close to completion. I agree he did not use the Boyd's rod but he is sponsored by this company and is fulfilling his obligations to that company. I do not think that this article was written to misguide readers, but to show them what Byron's sponsor has to offer. I think this rod has made big news, by offering micro guides on a production rod and the trend of rod builders going to this technology. Quote

JWR075 Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 So since the article was about the rod, they should not have shown said rod. I think people may be reading more into the review of the rod, than there really is. Even the article says it was not using it exclusively. Remember this article was only about the new rod: that is it nothing more, nothing less. Quote
JWR075 Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 The article also mentioned the swimbait, so since the fisherman is using both why not show them together. Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted April 7, 2010 Super User Posted April 7, 2010 The article also mentioned the swimbait, so since the fisherman is using both why not show them together. because that rod is not what he was using to throw that bait !! most of the hoopla was about the Rago swimbait and how it "won" the tournament , so by having it tied to a duckett rod , it gives the impression that this was also part of what "won" and that is pure misleading marketing to me . what if he was sponsored by Shimano and was promoting cumaras but was throwing a 8" hudd and was fishing it on a Rogue swimbait rod , but then takes pictures with the bait tied to the cumara , see what i mean . what makes this standout so much is that there was no way to fake it that he wasn't using ducketts rods , they are stark white and Rogue rods are blackish brown !!! oh well , i'm done on the subject ........ Dockhead Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 I agree it is pretty bad when you are on national t.v. using one thing and then blatantly saying it is something else. It is lying, let's call it what it is. A lot of people can live with that. So be it. But there are plenty of pros who use something other than what they are sponsored by - some say what it is, some "decline to mention" the brand. Either of those options are valid in my eyes. I think it is also pretty bad for espn to report something when they know full well it isn't what he said it was. Although I guess they don't want to get into that kind of situation with any angler, so they can just get out of it by reporting his claims. And here's the big question. It was mentioned that Velvick used the duckett rod the first days of the tourney, when the cameras were not rolling. So he goes into the final day with a 6 lb. lead, a lead he established using a particular piece of equipment, and then decides to switch it up? Just wants to see if he can catch em on another rod, the one he isn't sponsored by, on t.v. day? Ok, I gotcha.... Quote
tbird Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 IMO his rod (whatever it was) did not win the tournament for him...he found the right spot at the right time. Quote
JWR075 Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 I think people are reading too much into it. The article was about the rod. The rod does not really matter; the man was able to find the winning pattern and capitalized on it. The man was doing what he had to for his sponsor. If you fished for Daiwa and they did not have a rod suitable for a particular application, you would still wear a Daiwa logo regardless of the rod you used, because you are paid by them after all is said and done. Same thing was done here, end of story. Quote
