Repair Question

I have a bass pro extreme baitcast reel that is about 4 years old. I posted a few weeks ago about issues I was having with the reel. I purchased the parts that were recommended and the reel is still experiencing the same symptoms. I replaced the Main Gear, Pinion Gear, Pinion Yoke and Pinion Yoke springs. The symptoms are when I spin the handle hard and let it spin on it's own.If i put pressure on the handle it will make a fast clicking noise and the spool will continue to spin. I'm thinking the spool is either worn down or bent and not fully disengaging from the pinion gear. Does this sound right?

I just like to fix things and I am pretty good with my hands. So far I have only spent a total of about $15 on parts. I could just buy a new reel or send it in for repair but I like to fix things myself, it gives me a sense of accomplishment. I know there are people I could send it to but then I wouldn't that sense of accomplishment by doing it myself.

I could also pay someone to mow my lawn or change my impeller on my outboard I have but doing it yourself just feels better.

Nothing is wrong with it.  The engagement points on the pinion are slope to prevent stripping.  What you hear is the spool cross lock, hopping over those engagement points.  Keep doing this (not really EVER going to happen in real conditions) and you wear out another pinion gear.

One last reel question. I have a browning Citori that I purchased used and have had problems with since I got. Right in the middle of hard cast I can feel the reel get rough for a split second. I have replaced the side plate bearing and the bearing inside the spool tension knob. Any ideas. The rough spot only very slightly affects the cast. I am not sure what else to replace or oil or grease on this reel.

Wobbly spool, bent spool shaft, too much/little oil in the bearings....that's a tough one.

If you can tie the line to an unmovable object and do a hook set and not get the spool to react the way it does when you spin the crank hard and stop it (spool keeps spinning and ratcheting).

Then I would say your making something from nothing.

But if you do a hook set and the spool brakes lose then I would recommend you remove the pinion gear and check to see if you have the pinion yoke in upside down..

..( don't laugh it can be done)....

Good catch, David.  Or having the springs between the frame and pinion yoke....that would achieve the same slippage.

Thanks guys I will take a look but I am 99.9% sure the pinion yoke and pinion yoke springs are in there correct. I think the symptoms are what JFranco said, but I will try the hook set idea.

You'd see it, maybe.  Could just be a worn spool shaft, or beat up bearings.

Remove spool, roll on hard flat surface such as a kitchen counter. Anything bent or out of round will show up.

That sounds like you need to polish the inside of the pinion gear, and the surface of the spool shaft...

I can tell you that is isn't a bearing problem, could be oxidized bearing shims (if they are metal)....

But i would bet that it clears up with just a polishing of the free spooling friction points.....
