Flippin - line selection

Hello,

I've spent the last year flippin jigs on braided line. finally spooled my reel with mono. It doesnt seem to be too shabby either.

Can you guys give me some knowledge of pro/cons using Mono/Braided/Floro? at this point, they all seem to be pretty equivalent to each other.

Trying to make a decision on what to use before the season kicks off in michigan.

Because 'flippin' is a short line technique, I don't think it much matters. I use 20# Trilene BG, and it works just fine for me.

Good question!  i have been wondering the same thing.  I have always used mono and had a spool of sufix braid lying around and was going to put it on for flipping around docks and trees etc. but wondered how it would hold up (abrasion, etc.).  I will be watching this thread closely to see what people say. 

since you have used both, how would you compare the two?

I use #50 braid because it slices cleanly thru the weeds.

I am switching to 25# Fluorocarbon this year.  Not sure how it will work, but from using Fluoro. with other applications, I know it is more sensitive than mono and more abrasion resistant than braid.  I like to think it will be a winner for flipping, but only time will tell.

55 lb braid..I hate gettin stuck in the tullies..I like the braid because there's No stretch, and you can feel very subtle bites..You could always use a mono, or fluro leader if you have clear water, but I've used braid in clear water with good results.

Braid will slice through all kinds of vegetation and gives you ultimate line limpness. You will regret your mono when a hawg tangles you up and snaps the line like its nothing.

I started using 30lb Suffix Neon Tangerine just for the visibility, and put a 30lb clear mono leader on it. I like braid, and if this mono takes on a coil too easily, then I will go back to Power Pro, but I will get the bright yellow instead of green.

i also use braid for flipping and punching , i use 30 lb. braid (also what i use for frogs) and fine that the braid does cut thru grass mats and line visibility is not affected at all . like has been said , flipping and punching is a fairly short line technique so i don't worry about "line bow" with braid while flipping plus i use fairly heavy weights (3/4,1,1.5 oz. weights) wich takes out the "bow" letting you get excellent sensitivity and great hook sets

anyhow , as far as using mono , what i just desribed about braid is the oppisite with mono ( too much stretch , far less sensitivity , mushy hooksets ) but then again , if it works for you ....

Depends on cover here. In wood, I use 20# floro. In matted veggies I use 50#+ braid.

I've used both and I'm pretty set on 65# Suffix braid for flippin' and pitchin'. 9x/10 my 20# mono did the trick. The last time I used mono, a nice bass 20+" ran to the heart of Brer Rabbit's underwater briar patch. I could see him, but could not get my hands on him. He was wedged in the thicket and I felt like I was tugging on a rubber band. He wouldn't budge. After 5 minutes of frustration, he snapped off AND THEN he decided to move and swim off! He probably still has my black/blue jig hanging from his upper lip like some punk rocker. Lesson learned from then on.

Braid will cut through the grass a lot better than mono or floro.

I like to keep one flipping rod with 20-25# Big Game and one with 50# braid. Tried some fluoro on the Big Game rod, but it was a bit difficult to manage because of the memory.

I am still getting used to the braid to be honest, but I think eventually it will be my mainstay on both rods. In the thick vegetation, the pluses so far outweigh any negatives.
