Revo sx or BPS PQ

This will be my first baitcasting reel, so I was wondering about these two reels and which would be best for a beginner. The  revo sx is on sale at tackle warehouse for 119.00( last years model). I have heard a lot of good things about both of these reels. Any thoughts?

Since this is your first baitcasting reel I would go with the Pro Qualifier, it has dual braking which will really help you...

x2 on the PQ...especially since it's on sale right now for $79. The dual-braking feature is great and the reel is offered in LH and RH in 4 ratios. Search this forum for "PQ" or "Pro Qualifier" and you will find lots of recent threads about the 2009/2010 model of the PQ.

I believe the parts are interchangeable between the 2, per what others have said on here. The PQ would give you dual braking and cost less in the event you decide baitcasters aren't for you.  You should also add the Citica to your list for consideration.

I have a 09 PQ and love it, I let me buddy use it that cant cast a baitcaster to save his life, and he did really well with it.  For a first timer definitely get the PQ...

I have never used the PQ, but I have a Revo S, and I have used a Revo SX for a full day of fishing before.  I can tell you that I absolutely love the Revos, and that 119.00 is a good price for the SX.

I have an SX and it was my first baitcaster.  This reel gave me the confidence to move on to more "refined" tackle.  Having brake controls on the outside was key, because I was way too intimidated at first at the thought of opening up a reel to adjust it's performance.

I've never used a PQ, but I have been very interested in how it compares, other than weight and drag, because I'm thinking of adding one to the collection of my SX and my Curado E5 & E7.  Does anyone think it's too noticeable of a step down?

a citica 201d was my first BC and i dont regret it. i actually liked it so much i bought another. i would recommend it to anyone for a first BC in its price range.

I think you will be surprised at how smooth the PQs are. For $80 on sale it is steal IMHO. At $99 it is still a good value. I have 2, and the only reason I don't have more is that money is tight right now.

I ended up with the BPS PQ. I will try it out on Sat. Thanks for the advice. Since I am just starting out it is going to be trial and error for a while. The reel seems nice. Once I get it dialed in I hope it will work well for me. If anyone has this reel and has any advice on how to set it up ( set brakes, side dial, etc,) I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Once you have the spool tension adjusted correctly, I would set 4 of the centrifugal brakes on (out) to start. Set the magnetic brakes to ~5. Now with a 3/8 or 1/2 oz bullet weight or practise plug you are ready to go. Don't try for great distance; let the rod do the work. It won't take long and you will start to get comfortable. then you can start to back off on the braking; first on the mag then on the centrifugal-one at a time. Enjoy 8-)

I usually use 2or 3 centrifugal brakes and only add magnetic as needed, e.g. throwing a spinnerbait into the wind.

Agreed.  I am a Revo fan, but as a first baitcaster, I think you have done well with the PQ, some found the old model SX's kinda tricky  8-)

I understand exactly what your saying, learn on a old model sx and you can cast anything.  But people new to bc's many times tend to give up.  Sometimes something perceived as more user friendly makes the learning experience less abrasive and more pleasant.  I was one who never had issues with the sx but based on past thread/posts many people nixed them.

I hear you there, being my first baitcaster was a crappy Abu SilverMax lol.  I got soo frustrated in the beginning, but now I feel like I can use any baitcaster on the market.

lol...maybe refined was the wrong word... I just meant that the SX felt more like a quality reel that could take a bit of a beating from a beginner...

While I personally think the SX was the worst of the previous version Revo's, a Revo style reel is about all anyone will really need to bass fish at any level.  There is little justification in spending anymore money as the returns don't justify it.
