stealthcaster Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 I've always fished 6 or 8 lb test monofilament for bass. I have used braid for saltwater fishing but never in fresh. I have a friend who swears by it which has made me curious. Which kinds of braid do you guys prefer? The main pond I fish is very clear water (so stealth is key) but I also fish some that are stained/murky. Quote
stealthcaster Posted March 22, 2010 Author Posted March 22, 2010 Oops, sorry. Didn't mean to post this in the wrong section. Any info on braid would be much appreciated. Quote
Triton20XSD Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 I have not tried many brands but I do like Power Pro. Quote
Blade-Runner Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 I like Power Pro and the Stren Sonic Braid. Quote
aceman387 Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 I'm a big fan of power pro.i use 10#test in the green color and i use it in the crystal clear strip mine pits that i mainly fish and have no problem catching fish on it. Quote
DeanFishesNY Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 I use power pro and love it.. no problems with it yet Quote
Dockhead Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 I use power pro and love it.. no problems with it yet. Ditto. I'm sure the Suffix Braid is quality stuff as well. Quote

Japanese stuff..Daiwa Samurai for one. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted March 22, 2010 Super User Posted March 22, 2010 fireline braid.powerpro is a 4 strand and sufix is a 6 fireline is an 8 strand and is much smoother.diawa is even smotther but is to limp imho causing to many wind knots. Quote
stealthcaster Posted March 22, 2010 Author Posted March 22, 2010 Do you think I should go with something like 10lb braid the diameter of 4lb mono, or will it not hurt to go heavier? I am about to purchase an Abu garcia revo S (my 4th abu yet, but my first low profile reel) which can hold 140 yards of 12lb test. I am usually really big on hiding my hooks/line from fishing in clear water, so I was wondering how light I should go on the braid. Thanks for the responses! Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted March 22, 2010 Super User Posted March 22, 2010 With baitcasting equipment the 10# mono equivelent diameter superlines would be your best mid range choice. In most brands that is 50# test. Quote
Super User eyedabassman Posted March 22, 2010 Super User Posted March 22, 2010 Power Pro or Suffix. X2 I think I like the Sufix a bit better but, there are both great braids! Quote
Beastie Bass Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 I use Power-Pro and IT'S GREAT AND MADE IN THE US! I havent used the Sufix but I like their mono. Dont even waste the money on Fireline, its snapped on the cast after it buried down in the spool after a hookset! Several lost lures because of the Fireline Crystal. > I never had that happen with Power-Pro Quote
Lunkerlure Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 I use spinning exclusively and my choice of line will not work for baitcasting. I have tried spiderwire and fireline and found them too stiff. There are so many variables it boils down to what you are most comfortable with. After I found "Spectra" (50# test- about 12# dia.) by Izorline (actually a saltwater line) I use it on all my reels for all baits. It is limp and I love it. No problem breaking off and a 2 year life of use. Stealth?..I catch as many as my BC mono line buddies. So much for visibility. Izorline Spectra Fishing Line Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 22, 2010 Super User Posted March 22, 2010 Why do you think 50/12 wouldn't work on a baitcaster? Quote
chromedog Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 I use 65lb (12lb diameter) suffix for my pitching and flipping and frogs. I personally like it better than the fireline. Fireline feels like thick dental floss to me, real waxy. Quote
stealthcaster Posted March 22, 2010 Author Posted March 22, 2010 Wow. I am new to braid and these numbers like 50 and 65lb test are just blowing my mind, haha! I've NEVER broken off a bass with 8lb mono, and my biggest bass was just over 7 pounds. The only times I have used braid (maybe 40 or 50 lb) were for offshore bottom fishing, so I could pack more line on the reel. More importantly, there is hardly any stretch in the line so I can feel a bite instantly in 250+ feet of water. Do you guys go overkill on braid simply for it's resistance to abrasion? or do you choose it so that you can catch other fish besides bass? Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted March 22, 2010 Super User Posted March 22, 2010 I'll make my usual pitch for Diawa Samuri braid. 55lb, and if I use a leader, it's 12lb youzuri..the diameter of the 55lb samuri is the same as 10lb mono. So if you use a lower rated braid, the leader would also have to be lower, IF you try and match the the 2 lines diameter, which some guys like to.. As for abrasion, it isn't that great when you get into rocks..but it great for horsing out big bass from tullies ect. Quote
