DaveT63 Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 I've got a nice convertible that I barely drove last summer because all my rods are 7' one piece, so I drove my truck pretty much every day to hit the pond at lunch and after work. I think this year, I would like to find a 2-pc rod I can keep in the trunk of the car so I can drive it and still fish. It doesn't have to be a pricey rod. I'm thinking like a 6'6" MH Ugly Stik or comparable, with a comparably priced reel. Anybody got any suggestions on other 2-pc rods in that price range and quality? THanks, DAve Quote
Stasher1 Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 I keep a 2 piece 6'6" St. Croix Triumph and a Mitchell 308Xe in the car/truck almost all the time. I keep it spooled with 20# PowerPro braid which isn't as likely to be effected by the temperature extremes encountered in a car's trunk as monofilament lines. I also keep a Plano 4600 full of terminal tackle, a small handful of soft plastics, a couple spinnerbaits, and a couple jerkbaits in the trunk along with a small insulated lunch box containing several bags of soft plastics, a knife, needlenose pliers, and a small LED flashlight. Super User J Francho Posted March 18, 2010 Super User Posted March 18, 2010 There are much better 2-piece options out there than an Ugly Stik. The aforementioned Triumph is one. A few more from St. Croix: AVS66MLF2 AVS66MHF2 AVS70MF2 All are suited to most general bass fishing. Quote
bassin is addicting Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 for the "not so pricey" range you are talking about...i have a couple ugly sticks...2 piece i really like...both under $50. i keep in truck... question.....they are spooled with mono....so from other reply...is mono affected by keeping in trunk?? heat? Super User islandbass Posted March 18, 2010 Super User Posted March 18, 2010 Take advantage of the search feature here. This topic comes up on occassion and there is a wealth of solid recommendations here. There are nice 2-piece rods from makers like Shimano in their Clarus and Compre and Convergence rods to suit your needs. Quote
Lard_Bass Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 x2 on the Clarus 2-piece. I bought one for car trips and haven't been disappointed. Great rod for the price. Very sensitive and comparable to higher end rods that I have. Quote
Joe Boss Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 I would purchase a Berkley Amp or Shimano Voltaeus before an Ugly Stick. Quote
OIFBasser Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 It's definitely not a Loomis, but I have a 2 pc Ugly Stik Lite. It does good for a rod that I keep under my truck bench. I keep 10lb. Spider Wire on mine for the same reasons stated above, and only keep a 3600 box with tackle in it. Quote
DaveT63 Posted March 19, 2010 Author Posted March 19, 2010 Thanks for all the inputs! I wasn't quite ready to lay out the dough for the St. Croix and other higher dollar rods yet, as this rod still won't get as much use as my 1-piece rods I keep in the truck. But Bass Pro has their XPS® Extreme rods on sale right now, so I grabbed one of them. So now I can drive myself to fishing in style this summer!! Quote

Actually the Triumph retails for $60-$70, which is about what the Extreme sells for when they're on sale. The Extreme isn't a bad rod, just a bit heavy. I'm sure it'll be fine, though. Quote
midnighthrasher Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Compre. 6'6 medium fast 2 piece. Awesome rod for the money. I just ordered one casting and one spinning that will be my travel rods. Quote
