jenga Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 I have 2 rods one baitcaster and one spinning. I usually use a snap swivle so I can change lures quickly. I want to use floro but I know that it dosn't hold its knot strength very well. What knot should I use and should I use a snap swivle or not. Thanks, Jenga Quote
florida strain Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 what size test is it? mabey someone can help with the knot... i dont use snaps, i tie direct, not saying they dont work its just for insurance. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted March 16, 2010 Super User Posted March 16, 2010 I know that it dosn't hold its knot strength very well. News to me. Quote
BobP Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 A lot of guys who fish fluoro use an Improved Cinch knot or a San Diego Jam Knot because they include wraps around the line to cushion the line at the point of maximum strain (the Palomar does not). I've been using the San Diego for a couple of years now and have never had a break off at the knot. It's easy to tie and is a neat knot. I don't like snap swivels worth a darn on any bait. Crosslock snaps or Norman Speed Clips are OK. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted March 16, 2010 Super User Posted March 16, 2010 X 2..I've had my line snap, never had a knot fail.. I know that it dosn't hold its knot strength very well. News to me. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted March 16, 2010 Super User Posted March 16, 2010 jenga, good to you show up here occasionally. I would not recommend a snap-swivel for anything. The knot will always be the weak link in your rig, and should be re-tied often. Using a snap encourages one to be a bit lazy about having a fresh knot. The best knot is the one you tie best. Any knot will work just fine, if you tie it well, lubricate it well before cinching it down, and (the key for knots in flouro) cinch it up tight slowly. Flouro is more "grabby", and is much more prone to weakening from friction generated heat. I did a little testing a couple of years ago, and discovered that the best knots for me were the palomar, uni knot and SD jam knot. I can't tie a clinch or improved clinch knot that tests out at any better than 50%. Same for the trilene and no-name knots. I stick with the uni knot for line-to-line connections and for snelling hooks. SD jam knot for all treble hook baits, and palomar for everything else. Doesn't matter what line I'm using. The knot is chosen by the application, not the line. Quote
NBR Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 I have aged into the "Geezer" class and I'd bet it has been 60 years since I have used a snap swivel and it will be at least that long before I buy another. The "Palomar" knot has worked well for me with flourocarbon but you surely need to wet it good before you cinch it up. I do use a cross lock snap from time to time when I am too lazy to tie a loop knot. Quote
whoopbazz Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 lubricate it Very important for any knot. There is a tremendous amount of friciton and heat created when tying knots. Quote
lapieza Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 I use the uniknot on 8 - 15lb trilene 100% fluoro with no issues yet. Quote
BassThumb Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 SD jam knot for all treble hook baits, and palomar for everything else. Why SD jam instead of palomar on treble hooked lures? Is the SD jam better on a split ring? Quote
Stasher1 Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 SD jam knot for all treble hook baits, and palomar for everything else. Why SD jam instead of palomar on treble hooked lures? Is the SD jam better on a split ring? It's not that it's better, it's just easier. Spinnerbaits and treble hooked lures can be a PITA with a palomar. The SD Jam doesn't require you to pass the lure back through a loop. Quote
