CFFF 1.5 Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 I have an 06 BPS Extreme Baitcast reel. Last TX it was having some trouble about every 30 casts or so. When casting it was making a grinding sound and I could see the handle turning backwards during the cast. What part is most likely going bad. I want to fix the reel. No other part of the reel is affected by this. Quote

CFFF 1.5 Posted March 15, 2010 Author Posted March 15, 2010 Thanks I appreciate the offer but I can almost buy another used one for around the same price as getting it cleaned and fixed. I always clean and lube my reels myself but haven't ever really had to repair anything. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 15, 2010 Super User Posted March 15, 2010 If you have it cleaned and repaired by a professional you will have a "new" reel which is far better than buying another used reel. 8-) Quote
ksbasser Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 The pinion gear is not fully disengaed from the spool. The spool drive pin is hitting the bottom of the pinion. The cause could be weak springs, but could also be worn parts or too much grease on the pinion carrier or posts. You will probably need a new pinion gear now. I prefer to replace the main gear also so that they will be a matched set. You may need a new pinion carrier and new springs. Clean the reel and see if the pinion carrier slides freely on the posts. You should also check the cradle area of the pinion carrier. If it is worn doown, the pinion will set to low and may cause your problem. The parts are available from BPS rod and reel repair at the Springfeild store. Quote

I will break it a part when I get the time. One more question. My reel is a 5.4:1 and would like to make it a 6.4:1 can I change out the main gear to do this? Quote
ksbasser Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 yes, you should be able to change the ratio to any that it was available in. The customer service gals at BPS will help you with that. (417) 873-5274 Mon.-Fri. 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. central time Quote
