I recently got a 2010 Revo SX-L and when I opened it up to oil the bearings, I noticed that there was grease smeared all around the inside of the palm plate. Is there a reason for this? Can I clean it off without any ill effect to the reel? Thanks!

Wipe it off. Grease anywhere but the gears can potentially get where it does not belong. My '09 STX was the same way. Maybe the factory does it on purpose, perhaps to protect the inner surfaces in case the reel spends a long time sitting until it gets sold.

Manufacturers of all types are notorious for over-lubing for the stated reason of shelf life and for speed of processing. It should be cleaned out, but can wait until the first regular cleaning. If it's brand new and under warranty, use it as it comes. If it's not exactly right, exchange it.
