PowerPro sizing.

Just got a Shimano Crucial with the TN handle. Med EX Fast that I plan on smallie fishing with. I got to thinking that A 1000 size reel would be awsome on this as the rod weights nothing. Shimano says the 20 lb PP on the 1000 reel...Anybody using this combo??

Thinking this combo would play hell on smallies this spring.

Anyone using 20/6 PowerPro on a 1000 reel?

Since 20# Power Pro is 6# mono equivelent diameter, should perform well with the small reel and you won't have any line memory issues. The smallest reel size I use is the 2000 and it works great with superline.

Yes, lots of guys use 20lb braid on spinning gear. Try it to see how you like it.

I see 20# as overkill on such a light rig. This is a L rod, yes?

I've gone to 10# for my ML rigs, and you'll still need to add backing -a 125yrd spool will last you forever.

I looked it up -a M power rod. Personally, I'd go with 15#PP.

I've switched from PP to Suffix braid on all spinning less than 30#.

I think you'd like it better.

I use 103 PP with my StradicCI4 2500.  I have been thinking of replacing it with Sufix in 6# that I used to use with Stradic 1000 in the past.  So thin using a leader is almost a mute point.  Braids true # strength is way understated also.

i would think that with even how thin 20# power pro is , that on a 1000 size reel i would use 15 # PP . why are you gonna use such a small reel , if i were you i would get a 2500 size reel then spool it with 6 lb. P-line CXX or if you really want to use braid , go with the 20 lb. power pro , that way you can put a bunch on there , just my opinion ....

The reason I want to use the 1000 and not a bigger reel is weight.  The TN Grip rod looses the weight of the reel seat.  I felt both TN andFuji seated rods, and the TN grip is noticably lighter.  That with the 1000 reel will put it in the range of the Curado combo I have.  I want to use the 20/6 PowerPro just for pulling smallies in current and heavy weeds in the summer.

I use 15-30 lb PowerPro on a 2500 reel and it works great.

The only time I notice much of a weight difference is going up to the next step, the 3500 or higher.

Also another thing you need to watch out for is that yes you can catch smallies on that setup but the 1000 sized reels are made for smaller fish.

I have ruined reels because I caught several 3-4 lb bass on them, and they are not designed for that type of pull and drag. Usually around the 4th or 5th decent sized bass they start grinding, popping and not reeling properly. One of my UL reels dying was actually an accident, I caught a decent small 6" bluegill, was reeling him in and a 4lb bass came in and ate the bluegill getting caught on my tiny panfish hook. I brought him in and that reel never worked right again (Shimano spinning reel from the mid 90s, I forget the model).

That is why most of us use and suggest a 2000 or 2500 reel.

then by all means , spool up that 1000 size reel and catch some fat smallies !!!!  by your post i think that people will tell you their opinions and line preferrence for a reel that size , so take it for what it's worth . it is like asking " hey guys , how do you feel about me spooling up a Core 50mg with 80 lb. Power pro " , most people will tell you tyo only go with 30 lb. PP at the most , more than likely , spool it up with 6 or 8 lb. mono or floro . but then telling everyone that that is what you want (to put 80 lb. braid on the Core 50mg) so you are at a quandry , ask for opinions or just tell them what you are gonna do , see what i'm saying ?? so if you are gung ho on 20 lb. braid on a 1000 size spinning reel , then i guess we have to leave it at that .........
