Question about Spinning Reel...PLEASE HELP

I bought a 6'10 medium power Kistler Micro Mag spinning rod for shaky head and drop shot.  I am going to order a Pflueger Supreme for my rod.  I can not decide between the 35 or the 30 size for that rod. Any suggestions?

Try to see how the Pflueger spool sizes translate to Shimano/Daiwa spool sizes. For example the drop shot could be well handled with reels that have spool sizes between 1500 and 3000.

The Pflueger 3000 might be a size 30 reel and if it is, I'd try to find one with a 2500 size. My preferences for drop shotting are reels with size 2000 (20) or 2500 (25) spools.

I am assuming bass fishing. If I were targetting larger species, then 3500 or 4000 for fish like salmon.

if those numbers are similer to shimano then i would go with a 25, my shakey head rod has a shimano sehara 2500 which is a good size i believe.

Pflueger suggests 8# line for the 35 and 6# for the 30 if that helps.

I'd go with the smaller of the 2..I hardly ever use line over 6lb for shakey, or dropshotting..although my 2500 reel can use 8 lb .

The Supreme is a light reel and a 6'10" spinning rod will most likely be a bit tip-heavy, so I'd go with the larger 35-series reel to help balance the combo.

I agree...........I have 3 supremes and my 35 is used for snook and tarpon, way too much reel for freshwater bass, it would be excellent for pike.

For all around freshwater I'd go with the 30 on med6/12 rod, all the reel one would need.

i have to strongly disagree with these guys.look at any pro and they all use 4000 size reels.the reason is the spool is bigger so you have less line issues.the reel is stronger.i use a 3500 supreme xt.since the reel is magnesium weight is not an issue.i strongly suggest you follow in the steps of van dam and ike and use at least a 3500 size reel.

Dodgeguy, I'm not in complete agreement with regards to size,  the supreme is hard to beat in the price range.  Professional fishing so so different than recreational fishing, there aim is to drag that fish in as quick as possible and getting on to the next fish, they are working not having fun.  IMO recreational anglers are more into playing the fish.

I went to gander mountain, and of course all they had was two of the 4 models(25 and 40)..The 40 was way too big and the 25 was too small.  The guy at the counter said that pflueger is not making that real anymore, so they would not be getting anymore in.  I dont think he knew what he was talking about.  Anyhow, still a little confused, but I am leaning towards the 35. I will be using 6# yo-zuri ultrasoft if that helps any.  This rod will be used for St.Clair smallies and our famous michigan largemouth ;D(1-4 pounders). Thanks

With the Micro guides, is the first guide closer to the blank that with typical guides? If that's the case, you might want a reel where the spool & line sits closer to the reel seat and the line comes of in smaller loops. ??

I'd go with the 35. I have one in the bigger 40 size for throwing things on a 8' spinning rod across the lake or river into the next county, and people don't realize how very light these reels are comparative to their size.

I wouldn't be so quick to dimiss him as being clueless. Pflueger already has replacements for both the Supreme and the President. The Supreme XT and President XT have been out a while now and appear to be selling fairly well, so why wouldn't they discontinue the older models?

They might be planning that but have them still listed for their 2010 catalog.

The 2010 catalog is about a year old already. The PDF version I have was created in May '09. It's entirely possible that the reel has been discontinued since the catalog was produced.

I'm not saying the salesman is right, I'm just pointing out that he may not be wrong.
