NBR Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 You should think of the sytem. If up grade your reel and the rod isn't capable and the line is too heavy you aren't going to see results. Quote
seyone Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 I have a calcutta 50B and love it for the light stuff. Quote
ChrisAW Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 Well I went to Bass Pro today to check out what they had and the guy at the counter gave me some good advise. Go with what you know. I ended up with another Revo SX paired it with a "worm" rod and some 12# Pline. I have to say, I couldn't be happier. I already had one before and liked it, but now that I have the same thing set up correctly for casting lighter baits, it works pefectly. I was just out practicing with the smallest bait I had, which was an old 1-1/2" baby Rapala with no hooks on it. I can safely cast that little guy a good 30 feet out. I dont think I can find a lighter bait than that, and it will only get easier from there. Can't wait for this snow to go away so I can put it to use. ;D Quote

If you're gonna throw super light stuff you should use 8 or 10 pound. I been using 8 pound and fishing rocks/rip rap and had no issues. Quote
ChrisAW Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 That was my first thought, but both guys working the counter use the same thing on their weightless/jerk bait rods. It's Pline "Ultra Thin" flouro coated line. Without breaking out the calipers, it doesn't seem to be a whole lot thicker than the 8# on my Dropshot rod. I was out messing around with other slightly larger broken/unused baits, and a 1/4oz weight, and it cast's great. Around 40-60 feet depending on weight. Should be great when I get used to it and can turn the brakes down. Quote
-nick- Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 I just love it when somebody says " I only use 1/8 oz weight with my soft plastics and so-and-so reel works great"Well, thats not 1/8oz lure !!!! It might be 3/8 or more if you ad the weight of the hook and plastic .Try casting a Rapala xr6 or a 1/8 oz Bitsy bug (without a trailer) for a day and than tell me that your reel works great with 1/8oz baits !! Most of the baitcasters work good with baits of 1/4oz or more. IMO, the reels that best handle lighter lures, available on the american market are the Sol and the Core (I am not sure about Chronarch, i never fished with one; somebody might want to chime in) The Sol vas discontinued at Cabelas last summer and at BPS at the end of last year, but are availeble at other stores. Tight lines Hahaha what a joke. Obviously in his original post he clearly stated, that he usually will use 1/4-3/4, but will throw the occasional 1/8weighted tube. I guess the tube weighs absolutely nothing? : When I am throwing a t-rig with a 1/8 bullet weight I'm usually throwing small plastics, which probably equals the weight of a tube that he would throw with his 1/8 weighted hook. Don't you love it when people try and give stupid advice? : : Oh wait of course you do, you said so in the highlighted part of the qoute! ;D ;D ;D Quote
Super User burleytog Posted February 25, 2010 Super User Posted February 25, 2010 Try PLine CXX 8 lb. Quote
Bigs Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 I think for the money the yo-zuri ultra soft cannot be beat. Its $12 plus shipping at cabelas for a 600 yard spool. Oh and here's my Daiwa Pixilla on my fave finesse rod, the mbr842 glx Quote

My man, 40-60 FT ? , are you certain about the units ? :-? ; 40-60 ft is nothing, you should be able to cast a 1/4 oz bait 30-40 yards ( not feet ) away with 12-15 lb test on any decent reel. No wonder why you can 't cast too far something under 1/4 oz. Learn how to control the spool with the least amount of braking and tension, use lighter line, use a lighter rod. Quote

Yes, I'm probably wrong with my guestimate. It was a good distance, but being that there is about a foot of snow on the ground, I didnt walk it out to check. I was also fighting winds so I had the spool tension a little tight and the brake on max. I tied on a 4" Senko with a 2/0(I think) EWG this morning just to see how those cast. Being that the wind wasn't so bad today, I was able to mess with it more and had the brake off completely. It was throwing that senko beautifully. Again, didn't walk it out, but I may do it right now just to give a real number. Edit: Winds are back, but I rolled out the measuring tape and stuck a stick at 100 feet. Most casts were a couple feet short of that, some started to make it passed when I turn the brakes down. My hands started to get a little icy though, so I gave up for now. But yeah, my guestimate was pretty far off. 100 feet isn't as far as I seem to want to think it is. Quote
rubba bubba Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 So far air resistance of what is being thrown hasn't been brought up. Big difference in throwing a 1/8 bullet weight vs. a 1/8 oz Hula Grub. Quote

So very true. Ever notice how much further a texas rigged senko casts then a wacky rigged senko ? Big difference. Lil things like that make a difference. Thats why I love using the zappu wacky jig heads so much now. Quote
