Baitcaster for light stuff...........

I am looking to pick up a baitcaster for throwing, let's say 1/8 to 3/4 oz. stuff. Normally I will be throwing 1/4 to 1/2 but I would like a little wiggle room if possible. Some smaller spinnerbaits, and jerkbaits, and maybe drop down to some 1/8 tube throwing. I know that the rod has allot to do with reel's ability to cast so I am looking for a reel that will not disappoint the rod. Also I would like to keep my choices to reels that I can buy across the counter at Cabela's or BPS. Is there such a thing as a finesse baitcaster?

I thought that I heard the Daiwa Pixy is a good reel for casting light stuff.

Daiwa Sol. Should be sold at both Cabela's and BPS, but you can find them for under $200 on ebay NIB. Another option is a Steez, but it's close to $500.

I have used my revo-s to throw t-rigged tubes with 1/16 bullet weights. It felt a little funny at first, but when I got use to it there was no problem.

larry suggested the daiwa pixy which is probably the best finesse baitcaster but you won't find that at BPS or cabelas. they're really expensive too. the daiwa sol is your best best.

The Pixy is king for casting light stuff, costing twice as much as a Sol and being an JDM import I say, it 's the kind of reel you purchase when:

1.- you 've got more money than brains ( like I  )

2.- when you 've already covered all your reel needs and got a bunch of them

3.- you don 't have anything else in what to spend your money.

4.- when you can shell out that kind of money in a reel that specialized

The Sol, Chronarch 50 Mg, Curado 100D can cast a 1/8 oz weight with no problem.

I like using the curado 200E for fishing light weights.  I'm fishing weightless worms on it and it casts the baits pretty far.

I used to throw 1/8oz bullet weights on my trigs on my Citica200e all the time. The Curado200e is what I use now and it's perfect for 1/8 baits.

Here is a guy looking to sell a Pixy here, and I believe he is looking to get rid of it for a pretty good price. I also check TW and their price for a Sol is $249.95... The seller is is willing to sell his $260, if I read his post right.  Then  you will have a JDM reel....how impressive is that

I routinely throw unweighted soft plastics on an older BPS Extreme Reel and 7' MH All Star GT40X Rod. Unless you just want to spend some money on a reel designed to throw light weight lures any decent bait caster should be able to perform the task.

If you are trying to throw really small stuff like inline spinnerbaits or beetle spins you should really look into an UL.

the BPS here hasnt carried the Sol for a while now.

Right now, I have an Abu Garcia C4 with braid on a 7'6" flipping stick, which works great for everything I tie to it. Then, I have my AG Revo SX, which I spooled with 17# mono for this season. I plan to use this mainly for the bigger cranks and all that.

Whats the trick to casting the smaller stuff though? What weight and type of line should I use? I can't shell out $200+ for a reel though.. At the most, I was thinking of getting another Revo SX, since it could cast pretty light stuff before I up'd the line size. Is there any other reels under the $200 price range that might be better?

I did not post one because I want to consider all options. The Chronarch the Core and the Curado looked interesting but I'm not married to just Shimano reels. I want to consider what you folks use also.

me as well i was wondering what line and brakes i should use with a citca200e  for throwing weightless plastics or plastics with 1/8 to 1/4 weights if i should use the pink or black brakes and how u guys would set the brakes ex. 3 down or 2 down hope someone can help

Well, thats not 1/8oz lure !!!! It might be 3/8 or more if you ad the weight of the hook and plastic .Try casting a Rapala xr6 or a 1/8 oz Bitsy bug (without a trailer) for a day and than tell me that your reel works great with 1/8oz baits !!

Most of the baitcasters work good with baits of 1/4oz or more.

IMO, the reels that best handle lighter lures, available on the american market are the Sol and the Core (I am not sure about Chronarch, i never fished with one; somebody might want to chime in)

The Sol vas discontinued at Cabelas last summer and at BPS at the end of last year, but are availeble at other stores.

sal, i agree and was about to post something similar. most weightless plastics i'd guess are stick baits (senkos) and fat ikas/hydras and the like which are not light and can be cast like a rocket with pretty much any baitcasting reel. even a tube with a 1/8th oz. jighead or a lunker grub with a 1/16th oz. darthead ends up weighing quite a bit more and can be handled by most reels. now, a 1/8th oz. crappie jig is another situation altogether and even the sol/chronarch 50mg aren't able to handle those well.

The reel is only one part of the system, many reels that people don 't think can cast a light lure can do it, with the right rod and the right line, granted you won 't cast very far a 1/8th oz bait with a medium heavy rod and 12 lb test line, same reel with 6 lbs test line on a L/ML rod will cast that same bait a lot farther.

The Daiwa sol is great, I loved mine but I like my pixy alot better. I sent mine away and got everything upgraded , all pixilla upgrades done and its fantastic now. I love pitchin light stuff with it. The sol will suit your needs just fine too and is a close second. I have it on a mbr842 glx and it has to be the ultimate light/finesse setup for me. I'm using yo-zuri 8 pound test ultra soft hybrid line. Also consider a Daiwa Alphas, those can be had on ebay for between 175-275 used depending on which model you go with. I'm bout to get a type r alphas and the new pixy coming out as well to round out my arsenal.
