Jigs = 65 pound braid or 17 pound Trilene 100%

Spinnerbaits = 17 pound Trilene 100%

Finese stuff (shakey head, tubes, small t-rigs,) = 6 or 8 pound Trilene 100% or Seaguar

Drop-shot = 4-6 pound Sunline or Seaguar Invisx (depends on if I can get Sunline cheap or not) The 4 pound 100% does nothing but knot up on me.

Traps and Shallow cranks = 10 pound Trilene 100%

Creatures and Worms in grasslines = 17 pound Seaguar Abraisx or Trilene 100%

Hard Jerbait = 17 pound Trilene 100% (I like to get them on plane and in the boat asap. I usually don't fish the jerk deeper than 2')

Soft Jerkbait = 12 pound Trilene 100%

C-Rig = 65 pound braid with 15 pound mono mono leader

Frog and salad = 65 pound braid

Unfortunately, the way lines are rated (for marketing purposes), lb test means little. I go by diameter first, then other needed properties. The exception is braid which I go by rated break.

I fish for LM mostly in both soft and hard cover.

FC = Fluorocarbon

BR = Braid

ARM = Abrasion Resistant Mono/CoP

Shallow cranks .013 ARM

Mid cranks .012 (spring) or .013 or .015 (heavy rippin) ARM

Deep cranks .012 or .013 M or FC

Spinnerbait 30# BR w/.014 or .017 ARM

Jerkbait .010 M or FC or .012 FC

Texas Rig 20# or 30# BR w/.014 M ARM

Carolina Rig 30# BR w/.014 or .017 ARM

Frog 30# or 50# BR

Traps 10 or 12# .012 or .013 ARM

Jig .008 to .017 FC, or BD w/ARM. Big category for me, including grubs, jigworms, to small swimbaits, to light Flippin' work. I would even just throw DS in here too.

Flippin' >30# BRD

Since I do not have the income to support 8-10 rods at a time, I typically have 2 (and soon a 3rd) setup.

Power Pro braid 15-20 lb for vegetation

various types of mono usually 10-15 lb for shallow/topwater

Pline CX or CXX copoly 10-20 lb for deeper or all around.

The Pline copoly is nice because you can use it for almost anything. It is light enough that with little to no weight, it can stay on top or very shallow for topwater lures, it is clear and invisible underwater for deeper presentations, and so far I have had no problems using it in light vegetation.

I have a few extra spools of mono but since I started using the Pline CX and its versatility, the mono mostly just sits there unused (or used for panfish reels).

I only have 4 setups and don't want to change out line all the time so

Jigs, weighted soft plastics, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits (in general single hook lures 3/8 oz or greater) 12 lb Big Game

Cranks, topwater, jerkbaits (treble hook lures) 10 lb Big Game

Weightless soft plastics, small jigs, small spinnerbaits (under 3/8 oz) 8 lb Trilene XT or Big Game

Small cranks, very small plastics (basically for smallie creek fishing) 6 lb Trilene XL

For my spinning rods (the bottom two) I also have some braid on spare spools, but I don't use it much at all.

In general I think us bass fisherman are WAY over what is actually necessary to get the job done.

In overview, the preferred line-test for mid-depth cranks

ranges from 8lb to 20lb test (nylon or fluoro).

That's quite a disparity, because 20 lb line is 60% fatter in diameter than 8 lb line

and 150% stronger.

In general I think us bass fisherman are WAY over what is actually necessary to get the job done.

Where do I sign? :)
