Baitcaster help please..

I'm having some troubles with my new baitcaster..i used to only use spinning tackle and really wanted to become a more serious bass fisherman, so i invested in an abu garcia revo premier..i just need to know how to set it up so that i'm low on birdsnests and how to be the best caster i can be..someone help please..

turn the brakes all the way up and tighten the tension knob to where the bait barely falls when you engage the spool...once you start getting comfortable with that start easing off the brakes and tension...practise practise practise.

Don't know what kind of braking system your reel has, but the link below is a primer to just getting started. Even if your reel doesn't use centrifual brakes there are great nuggets of information.

If I can say one thing that is use at least 1/2 of weight to start and think of not using anything lighter until you get the hang of it. Use a bass casting weight and stay away from learning with lures that are not very aerodynamic.

x2 on atleast a 1/2 oz. weight to practice cast , i would even suggest using a 3/4 oz or 1 oz. egg sinker and cast in an open area . as soon as you get the heavier weight down , start to go lighter and ease off on the spool tension knob till you can cast 1/4 oz. weights proficiently ....

Peel off about 2 casts worth of line and put a small piece of electrical tape across the line on the spool. That way your backlash won't go too deep into the spool. When you do backlash, DON'T pull on the line. Tighten the drag down as far as it will go, mash your thumb down on the reel and give 1-2 cranks. press the thumb-bar and peel off free line. Repeat as necessary to clear the backlash.

With the exception of the newest generation of some of the revo's, Most Revo reels have only magnets for the braking system. Mag reels need to be set differently than centrifugal reels. Magnets have the most resistance on the spool while it's turning slow, therefore, you need to have the magnets turned off when you set the tension cap. If you have the magnets set while you you adjust the tension, then the mags will slow the spool which leads you to believe that you have the tension set correctly, when in fact, you have the tension set way to lose. This is the primary reason that so many people think these reels are hard to use. Read the setup directions that came with the reel. step one: set mag at zero. step two adjust tension to a point that when you depress the cast bar, your bait will not drop until you lightly shake the rod tip, then the bait should drop a ft or 2 before stopping on it's own. Step 3: adjust mag control to desired setting, increase if needed. Once you are doing good with these settings, you can set the tension a little looser than the 1 ft drop.
