I'm pretty old school myself. I use only Berkley Trilene XL mono in 4, 8, 10, and 12 pound test on spinning and baitcast rigs. The only rig that is spooled differently is my heavy catfish rig, which has Trilene Big game 50 pound test.

I agree with Dan, I would have to say stick to 12-14 lb copoly, such as P-line CX or CXX clear fluorescent. I do just that, use the copoly for almost everything, except heavier vegetation where I have a reel with braid. So I tend to have both on me and try to work both the green stuff and the open/deeper water.

BPS Excel, 8 for spinning, 12 for baitcasters. Buy a big roll, it's cheap and I have been using this line for a long time.

I remember 8,9,10 years ago reading the equipment/lure blocks in Bassmaster on what pros used in any given tournament.  I was amazed at the number of pros that used Trilene Big Game.  I used it. I was fairly cheap, held up, had good knot strength and cast pretty well.  It can't have gotten worse over the years but there is little written about it.  That would be my suggested line.

14 pound floro works great, but keep some mono for topwater so you can use it as a leader

Braid!!! 20-30lb should be suficient for all your needs. If you need some stealth ( for clear water) just tie on some leader material. You will never have to "respool" braid like Mono or flouro. Theres no memory to deal with and its strength to diam ratio is unmatched.

I myself prefer Pline CX and CXX for most applications but the braid with fluoro/copoly leader makes sense too.

If you go braid, the general consensus seems to suggest 30 lb or better although I myself prefer 15-20 lb. since I mostly use spinning rods. I also do not care for having a separate leader as any extra knots/ties between the lure and the reel potentially comes a chance for losing the lure/fish (except for people that tie a perfect knot every time), but that is just my preference.

On spinning I would suggest 20lb. On casting gear at least 30 if not 50lb. The higher lb on casting gear will help with dig-ins and ease of picking out any birds-nests. You cant go wrong with Power pro or Sufix.

For my reels I only use braid, I tried 30lb power pro and all that did was dig into the spool and I was losing lures...  I went up to 50-65lb and I havent had that problem since....
