santeebasser24 Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 I am going to be fishing a tournament this weekend on a lake, that is very shallow(1-4 feet mostly), plus it is full of grass. I know some anglers has done well with the baby 1 minus, is there any other very very shallow running crankbait that fits this situation as well? Thanks so much for the help. Have a Blessed week! Super User .dsaavedra. Posted January 22, 2008 Super User Posted January 22, 2008 Bandit Footloose is my go to lure for those situations. cranks produce very well when theyre fished shallow over grass like that. i have a baby 1 minus and it is poor quality. i would definitley go with the footloose over the mann's any day. Super User .dsaavedra. Posted January 22, 2008 Super User Posted January 22, 2008 oh yeah....GOOD LUCK!!! Quote
Super User Tin Posted January 22, 2008 Super User Posted January 22, 2008 They catch fish but are constructed poorly imo. Some will sink or not run true out of the box. Eventually everyone I have ever owned did the same, some after 1 fish, some after 20. There are better choices for shallow cranks. Strike King 1s is what I go to now. *Give a spinnerbait a shot too. Tpayneful Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Don't tell anyone because I don't want the secret to get out but the Bandit Footloose is a much better bait than the Mann's -1. Quote

Steven I have a Mann's baby and like it, but it has not see enough water time to judge longevity. Rapala countdowns. Cast it out and crank it in. It will run about a foot or two. Cast it out and wait a second or two and it will run 2-4 feet. Shallow Shad raps and Fat raps can be run shallow. Quote
ABC123 Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 I'm not sure if people know this, so I will explain. Mann's makes a lure series called 1 minus. In this series there is the standard/plain/unnamed 1 minus, mid 1 minus, baby 1 minus, and tiny 1 minus. The standard/plain/unnamed one is 3 1/4" long-5/8 oz The Mid one is 2 3/4" long-3/8 oz The Baby one is 2 1/4" long and 1/4 oz The Tiny one is 1 1/2" long and 1/8 oz The name comes from the size (Baby, Tiny, Mid, ect...), and the fact it dives 1 foot or less (1 minus). Super User Sam Posted January 22, 2008 Super User Posted January 22, 2008 Bandit Footloose. You can't go wrong. The Footloose is very, very good and I like it better than the Minus 1. What about a Pop-R fished slow, too? Or a Spook? Or slow roll a spinnerbait, if possible. Or throw a worm, Texas or Wacky style, and let her sit and fish her s-l-o-w. Like move her a few inches every 45 to 60 seconds if you can stand it. And don't forget the good ole jig and pig. Have fun; keep warm; and let us know how you do. Quote
santeebasser24 Posted January 22, 2008 Author Posted January 22, 2008 Thanks for the replys! I will pick up a few bandits. I just hope I run up on some bedding fish. With the moon, and the warm water (power plant lake) we usually see a good bit of bedding fish this time of year. The low is going to be 23, so I can bet it is going to be VERY FOGGY that morning! Thanks again. God Bless! Steven Quote
Super User Marty Posted January 23, 2008 Super User Posted January 23, 2008 I've been using the Baby 1- for years and it does a great job of attracting strikes. The hooks do tangle a lot so they have to be watched closely. Another super shallow lure I use is the Heddon (formerly Excalibur) Swim'n Image, which goes to 18". This offers a different look, since it's a longer bait and I also think I get a better catch-to-strike ratio with it. Quote
fathom Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 wake baits are one of my go-to's. lucky craft cb-001 is a gold mine, as is bagley's bulgin' b...the footloose is ok and i gave the 1minus to some folks down the street that i really don't like. in my lakes, the storm subwart (baby bass) outproduces all of 'em but, you can show it too often. imo, would pick up more than one style...as with all lures, familiarity breeds contempt. Quote
fathom Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 p.s. i generally take both hooks off and replace them with one single 2/0 gammie on the belly. hooks won't foul and the only fish you may miss will be dinks. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted January 23, 2008 Super User Posted January 23, 2008 I am surprised so many people have had bad expierances with the Baby 1-, it is one of my favorite baits. Other than changing hooks I have never had any trouble, and I own about 60 of them. I have had some that have run true for years with no tuning, and I like the new Elite series even better than the older ones. NOW the Mann's 4-, I am not a fan of. Quote
shortbasser Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 Yo-Zuri 3-D Flat Crank. It runs real shallow. Has a lip on it similar to the shallow shadraps. Loud rattle and tight wobble. It has been putting fish in the boat for me. Even in less than 50 deg. water 2 weeks ago. Shortbasser Quote

A little too lightweight, but it is an awesome producer. Quote
