IwillChooseFreeWill Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 I have a limited budget, $50 or less. The rod will be my (new) primary bass rod (7' MH). Suggestions on spinning reels only, no spincast or BC reels, please. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 I have Pflueger President That can be found for $50-$55 on sale. It's a smooth sturdy reel at that price point and comes with two spools. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted February 19, 2010 Super User Posted February 19, 2010 You could probably find a Shimano Symetre FI for about $50 these days. I'd put my money on one. If not, then the Shimano Spinning reel at that price point. I think that would be the Sonora or Sedona but I could be mistaken. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted February 19, 2010 Super User Posted February 19, 2010 Pflueger President Quote
basscrusher Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Shimano Solstace. $40 MSRP. Has most of the features of high end Shimanos. I have a new one and its almost as nice as my Stradics ($100+ reels). I HIGHLY recommend it. Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted February 19, 2010 Super User Posted February 19, 2010 Pflueger Trion. $39.99. Absolutely bulletproof. My Trion has been taking an a** whipping going on three seasons now with no troubles. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted February 19, 2010 Super User Posted February 19, 2010 Another vote for the Pflueger President. They are solid reels for the money. Quote
Tpayneful Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 I really like my BPS Extreme spinning reel. $39.99 when it is on sale. A wider spool is better! It casts a mile and has less line twist than other narrow spool reels that I have used in the past. It made me like spinning reels again! Quote

hmongkidBee Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 I got a shimano symetre 1500FI reel for sale for $45 shipped. It's the older version and not the 2009 version. Quote
IwillChooseFreeWill Posted February 20, 2010 Author Posted February 20, 2010 Thanks for the suggestions all... I was looking at the options and my budget, and I can pick up a Pflueger Trion GX-7 at a few places for $40 or a combo for $60. Combo: Rod TR701 7' M Reel 4740GX (195yd / 10lb) This seems to be the front runner right now unless someone can convince me otherwise I got a shimano symetre 1500FI reel for sale for $45 shipped. It's the older version and not the 2009 version. I appreciate the offer but I would rather run with a 2000-2500 rated for closer to 200 yds for 10lb Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted February 20, 2010 Super User Posted February 20, 2010 Thanks for the suggestions all... I was looking at the options and my budget, and I can pick up a Pflueger Trion GX-7 at TW for $40 or a combo for $60 from Cabelas or BPS.Cabelas shows: Rod TR701 7' M Reel 4740GX (195yd / 10lb) Keep in mind sometimes the combo does not come with the extra spool that you get when you buy just the reel - if that's even important to you. The 4740 is a very large reel. I have the 4725, which is on my ultra lite rig. Most guys use the 30 or 35 size for bass fishing. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted February 20, 2010 Super User Posted February 20, 2010 Shimano Spirex Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted February 20, 2010 Super User Posted February 20, 2010 Just picked up a Shimano Sonora and it casts a mile. I almost use Shimano exclusively and would say my favorite sub $100 reel is a Sahara ($30 over your budget)... the only one I'm not a huge fan of is the Spirex secondary to the lack of Super Stopper Anti-reverse like the other models have. trevor Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 You should go check out "Lakeside reels". Great discount prices on good reels. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted February 20, 2010 Super User Posted February 20, 2010 I have one as well...great reel for the $$$. Shimano Solstace. $40 MSRP. Has most of the features of high end Shimanos. I have a new one and its almost as nice as my Stradics ($100+ reels). I HIGHLY recommend it. Quote
IwillChooseFreeWill Posted February 20, 2010 Author Posted February 20, 2010 A big thank you to everyone for their suggestions. Well I ordered it. I spent the last few hours looking over reviews for various spinning reels from various companies for various prices. One name kept coming up again and again: Pflueger. Due to how long the company has been around and the quality of their products, I went for it. I ordered the rod/reel combo from BPS for $60. The reel is the one piece 7' Medium (or was it MH, I need to check again). My accountant (aka wife) also approved increased expenditure funds so I picked up a spool of Pline CX 12lb and a basic $25 rod/reel 6'6" combo with a small 1000 spinning rod to replace one of my 30 year old reels that recently broke and old faded 1980s rod. That one got good reviews too for panfish and catfish, the reel is the BPS Stampede. Order total just a touch over $100 after S&H. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted February 20, 2010 Super User Posted February 20, 2010 Pflueger.......good choice. Shimano makes great reels as long you are spending a bigger buck, their low level reels aren't too good. Quote
