Hey guys need some advice here. I'm getting into baitcasting this year and have settled on a 6'6" MH rod. I have a St. Croix Avid spinning rod and absolutely love it. So I'm deciding between the lower priced St. Croix's like the Bass Mojo for a 100$ or maybe a BPS Carbonlite. Is the St. Croix Avid or a similar GLoomis GL2 worth the extra 50-75? Funds are tight but it's not often I buy rods so somebody steer me in the right direction because I'm going nuts with all this ice (nothing else to do lol)

I've never fished a Loomis but I'll tell you that I've heard over and over that Loomis isn't worth it until at least the IMX line.

If it was my money, I'd select an Avid over a Mojo every day of the week and twice on Sunday ;)

The Avid and Mojo are great rods.  For the price range you cant go wrong with the Mojo.  I personaly like the carbonlite due to the weight, sensitivity and I found the handle much more comfortable in my hands.  After feeling the carbonlite, the mojo just felt too heav to me.  It is what you like when you choose your rod that counts though.

Definately not the loomis. In your price range I've heard alot of chatter about the falcon bucoos. I've never used one so I don't know. There are also plenty of other companies that have come out with rods to compete in the $100 market so look around and evaluate your options.

Don't consider the Loomis GL series, they are decent rods, but you can get better for your money in their price range. Loomis starts to stand out with the IMX line. The Avid on the other hand is a very good rod for the money and is worth the extra money.

I own several GL2 & GL3 rods as they were the first Loomis rods I purchased. They are not bad rods but like others said you may find better or comparable rods at a lower price. The IMX rods are awesome...I own 4 of them. I do own a St. Croix avid and love it. Also own 2 St. Croix Legend Bass and they are awesome rods as well. Having said that I would go with the Avid over the GL2. Can't speak for the Mojo. Good luck.

My advice is to save some money and buy a Loomis

from our Flea Market. This week I purchased an

IMX MBR844C for $185 delivered. This is a rod you

will fish the rest of your life.

8-)

I own a Greenwater, which i've heard is the same as the GL3 series.  My best friend uses all GL2 and GL3s, but he's bought all of them at a discounted price.  I had the same problem as you, and I think i'm going to go with Lamiglas Excel which seems to be a great rod that won't break the bank.  You may want to check that out too

i own a few g.loomis, and they are only worth the money once you are at the imx or glx levels.

and if u ever brake a g loomis you can send it back no questions asked, i have sent back 4 lol

Sending 4 back............that's an endorsement on quality.

We are programmed to believe the more you spend the better the product, I don't think that's always the case.  Much of has to with not losing face over spending more than we needed to, I suffer that same guilt.

I fish Falcon Bucoos and can't complain there great rods and are extremely light.

My only issue is they don't come in any size bigger than 7'

I've been saving to get a Lamiglas excel Which I hear is great plus comes in bigger sizes

I recently bought an avid and its great, really worth the extra money. If you already like the st croix you have why not buy another. They really are great.

I never met an Avid I didn't like. They are great rods for the price in both casting & spining.

As an update to this story, I have the chance to purchase a one season old MH Gloomis GL2 for 100$  You guys think its worth saving the $ vs. a higher end Gloomis or St. Croix?

Don't buy it.   JMHO

Go with the Avid. I have 3 and love them all.

Haven't used a loomis so I can't really make a fair comparison. Just my 2 cents.
