Josh Bassman Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 I'm thinking about using a 10lbs braid and a 6lbs fluorocarbon leader and a double uni knot for my shakey head fishing. I also use the same rod for wacky worms. Do you think the braided line will float to much for the wacky worm setup? Or will the small dia. braid cut the fluorocarbon? Good idea or bad? Quote

Lucky Craft Man Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 The set-up you mentioned will work, as I have used braid with a fluoro leader for both sahkyhead and wacky rigged worms. Though, I prefer to use just straight Fluoro for both of these techniques (I guess it is just a personal preference). For me, I was able to tell the subtle movements of the line when deadsticking a wacky rigged worm more with straight fluoro than with braid. As far as why I use straight fluoro for shakyheads I guess has to do more with my rod. I have ReCoil guides on my shakyhead rod and that braid really makes it hum. I still use a braid/fluoro leader for drop shots, which I feel has really increased my success with this technique. Quote
Super User David P Posted February 16, 2010 Super User Posted February 16, 2010 I have had a LOT of problems with the uni knot attaching braid to fluoro. I tie a blood knot and if it's tied right, I've never had a single issue. Quote
bobbyc Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Floro is ideal for wacky worm fishing. Six pound is excellent for clear water. Perhaps ten lb. in and around heavy cover. I can't see any advantage to the braid, i know price certainly isn't an advantage!? Quote
Dr. Perf Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 I am using a braid/fluorocarbon combination with various setups. The braid varies from 10-30# with a 6-14# fluorocarbon leader. After initially using a uni-uni combination to join the two lines, last summer I moved to the Stren knot (uni/improved clinch). The knot is smaller than a uni-uni and when tied correctly retains close to 100% of the lightest line's rating. My experience to date is that braid appears to have increased sensitivity/bite detection over straight fluorocarbon in some cases. Still using straight fluorocarbon for some setups. Also, I have not noticed "braid noise" when used with Recoil guides. That may have to do with the brand of braid used. Doc Quote
tand Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 http://www.netknots.com/html/albright_special.html Albright Knot! I have used the blood, double uni and now exculuivly the albright knot...it was shown to be by an offshore fisherman who fished vertical jigs (5-10 oz in 120 to 200 fsw). You might do it wrong a few times so make sure you practice and test the knot strength. I currently use it with 20 pound power pro and 20 pound flouro leader. Im yet to break this knot but I have bent some hooks! Quote

I can see the braided line easier, and an add benefit is I can cast it further. Quote

Using high visibility superline (for strike detection) with a fluoro leader is something I've been doing for years, and it's a great set-up. Probably not for everyone, as some folks can't or won't learn to tie good knots, which is essential. As far as the price of superline versus going straight Fluorcarbon, using superlines as a main line is much more economical because you rarely have to re-spool. I have one finesse rig I use for shaky heads and smaller lures, it's spooled with 4/10 Fireline and I use mostly 8- or 10-pound test Fluoro leader on it. I spooled it two years ago with the Fireline, and because I only cut into it a few inches each time I re-tie a leader, it's still has an almost full spool. How many times in two years of fishing that rig about once a week would you have to re-spool Fluoro? 4, maybe 6 times? Quote

What type of fireline would you recommend? I would like something that I can see easily. I will be using a 6lbs fluorocarbon leader. Also, what is your opinion on knots? My plan was to use a double uni, but the Albright Knot looks good? I like the 6lbs fluorocarbon, but it's hard to see sometimes. A lot of my bites are very lite, and it's important that I'm able to see my line. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted February 17, 2010 Super User Posted February 17, 2010 Seriously..? 55# braid with a 12# fluro leader, I tie a uni to uni, 6 turns on each side..and throw swimbaits ..never had a bait fly off due to the knot. Oh..Diawa Samuro braid...not waxy, no break in period..stuff cast's a country mile,, I have had a LOT of problems with the uni knot attaching braid to fluoro. I tie a blood knot and if it's tied right, I've never had a single issue. Quote
Josh Bassman Posted February 17, 2010 Author Posted February 17, 2010 Diawa Samuro braid is a lot of $$$$. ***.com 300yds of 15lbs = $72.95 Quote

Josh Bassman Posted February 18, 2010 Author Posted February 18, 2010 Randy, thanks for the help. The article "The Superline Advantage" linked below is great. http://ozarkoutdoorjournal.blogspot.com/2008/05/superline-advantage.html Good luck Quote
IwillChooseFreeWill Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 good stuff here... personally I love the Pline CX copoly line for worm rigs and tend to stick with 8-12 lbs., it works well for surface, shallow and deep presentations. If you like braid, I have had good luck with PowerPro green braid. It does lose the color after a while but that is no biggie, either cut off the faded part or just buy a green sharpie and color it if you feel the need. Quote
