Flipping & pitching reel...

Thinking of trying out abu garcia reels.  I'm interested into knowing what suggestions you'd all make for a flipping/pitching reel from them.  Which can handle braid better and 17lb mono...Also thinking of trying the Shimano Core for a flipping reel???? Or any other suggestions....7:1 gear ratio would be preferred and a flipping switch is not needed but a bonus. Thanks!

The revo STX and Premier both have good free spool for pitching. The STX comes in 7.1:1 the Premier is 6.4:1.

if your willing to spend the extra $ get a shimano core 50mg amazing reel for for flipping and pitching also can cast light weight plastics really well.

Abu has this really cool new braking system on a lot of their Revo reels. Its call a pitch centrifugal braking system and it is a modified centrifugal brake especially designed for pitching. BIG BIG fan of this! The problem I have had pitching is the spool never turns fast enough to activate the centrifugal brake blocks but this new system works great when pitching. The pitch breaks turn on as soon as you let her rip really giving you that added control when pitching also works great on a windy day. The down side for your maybe I haven't seen a flipping switch model in Abu other than their Max reels which I don't think is what you're looking for. So if you can live with out the flipping switch I would say get a Revo S or if you really need line capacity try the High Speed Toro 6.4:1 according to their web page holds 200yds/14lbs. Another cool thing is the reel can be used like a normal baitcaster just use any of the 3 standard centrifugal brakes instead of the pitching brakes.

Any of the Revo line will perform well for pitching.  The 7 to 1 ratio is great for taking up line quick on a fast strike and bringing in your bait for the next presentation.  Revo SX and STX reels have tremendous drag systems.  All the Revos handle braid well.  I pitch a 5 inch weightless Yum Dinger on #17 with no problems.  I hear very good things about the Core but have not owned or used one.  The " flippin switch " feature can be found on the Quantum Accurist PT series which I own and have used for over 8 years. That feature takes ALOT of practice because you must maintain pressure on the thumb bar to keep the spool in the free spool mode.  If you have small hands it will be a chore.  The feature is OKay and it works but I for one don't use it.  Good luck !

Awesome thanks all whats the diffrence between all the core models, spool size?  Going to look into the Abu series some more with their braking system.

I dont think the reel of any brand has much to do with flippin and pitchin. I think you should hone your skills with a reel you are comfortable, and confident with. Go buy what you want then tie a 1/4 oz jig on the end and start practicing. Once you learn how to do it you can flip/pitch with any reel of any brand.

The core 50mg is my dream pitching reel.  Buddy of mine has one and it does great pitching.  I personally use a Curado 200E7 and like this setup.  I use 15-20lb fluoro or 50lb braid and this reel does great with all of those lines.  I say go with whatever feels good in your palm and has a high speed gear ratio.
