Possible baitcasting reel defect?

on my Megaforce Twitchin' 100TSHL,(its new) when line is getting peeled off the reel, the guide that moves side to side to spool the line on/off doesnt move. but the odd thing is that when i reel in line, it moves perfectly! so im stumped

If I am correct that eye should not move when you are casting. If it did, that would mean that something is still connected with the spool and that would not allow the line to come off freely. The only time that eye should move is when the gears are engaged and turning. When the line is released only the spool should be moving with the smallest amout of friction possible with the rest of the reel.  I am pretty sure your reel is fine.

are u positive? because my ambassator(spellings bad and its an older model) im sure the eye moves both when releasing and obtaining line

In older reels the levelwind remained engaged and moved as the spool turned in either direction. This configuration is no longer used. There is nothing wrong with your reel.

Its still the case in many "big game" reels, not so much for bass gear, which is relatively light weight stuff in the overall scheme.

Almost all ambassaduer round reels move on the cast. They do that so the line doesn't have to run at an angle on the cast with wide spool reels. It has nothing to do with the age of the reel. A brand new 5000 or 4600 or any other biiger reel will be this way. most all surf and ocean reels are the same.

i only have the Twitchin and the ambassaduer round reels (baitcasting anyway). just two.  The  ambassaduer was my first ever so i  just assumed all did that  ;D

On reels with synchronous levelwinds, the outgoing line has to drive the levelwind worm gear and the line guide back and forth, which uses energy. That isn't a big deal if the spool is heavy and you are throwing a heavy bait since the heavy spool will store energy and will tend to keep spinning like a diesel. But for light baits, you want a light spool that requires less energy to start spinning and a non-synchronous levelwind that will not steal energy from the spinning spool (there isn't so much energy to steal!). Most bass reels now use non-synchronous levelwinds and light spools. They cast well and are easy to control reliably with centrifugal or mag brakes. But the synchronous reels still have their place, especially for throwing heavy baits on large line. For example, I like an Abu C4 4600 for 3/4 oz C-rigs because it will throw one a country mile. That heavy spool just keeps dieseling along, spitting out 20 lb braid. Pitching 3/16 oz jigs? Give me something with a feather light spool for that.

Actually, Abu introduced a reel in the early 80's. the Ultra Mag XLT Plus, a European version reel that made it to the US, which that had the level wind disengage and free float on the spindle as the line fed out during the cast. When you re-engaged the reel the level wind guide re-engaged and operated normally. The idea was ideal as the line guide free floating reduced the amount of friction the line experienced as it left the spool vs. having to move through a fixed line guide. The feature was last seen on early versions of the 521 XLT around 1985. Great idea that just never took off. It did make for a more complicated level wind assembly.

The levelwind on Ambassadeur 5000 class and 6000 class reels do move on the cast. Most other Baitcasters for bass fishing do not. Your reel is fine.
