Bassin for Walleye Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 I saw a topic before that I thought was pretty interesting but now I can't find it. It had to do with putting things into the butt of the rod to customize it a little bit and I wanted some more pictures and ideas of what to do. I kind of want to put a shotgun shell thing in it but need to find a way to cut the piece off. Any help and pictures would be appreciated. Quote
FishnBen Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 I can't imagine why no one will give you any advice on "putting things into the butt" ;D Totally kidding Quote
SWMIBASSER Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 Not sure. But I would like to have a rod shortened at the butt end, and have a nice looking balancer put on it. I'll be watching this thread. Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted February 10, 2010 Super User Posted February 10, 2010 you can do it with carrot sticks Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 What are the current dimensions of the rod you want to modify? In swimmbasser's case, if you trim off too much the weight required to balance may add too much to the overall weight. IMO balance is a little subjective and takes a back seat to handle length and over all weight. The more detail, the better recommendations that can be made. Quote
Bassin for Walleye Posted February 10, 2010 Author Posted February 10, 2010 Maybe I didn't word it well. What I'm looking for is like a little picture to put at the end of your rod in the butt (don't know how else I could word it, sorry) like on the other thread I saw coins in there and like I mentioned like a shotgun part. Hopefully this clears things up a little. I'm not looking to balance it. Quote
Super User .RM. Posted February 10, 2010 Super User Posted February 10, 2010 Are you talking about doing an inlay in the end of the butt cap? Quote
RobE Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Are you talking about doing an inlay in the end of the butt cap? I think he is, David. BfW, it sounds like you want to 'inlay' the cut-off rim of a shotshell into the end of an existing butt grip. Am I correct? If so, are you dealing with cork, or foam or what? There are a few really good rod-building sites out there with pics of folks work. If it's not against the law, I could provide a few links. Quote
Bassin for Walleye Posted February 11, 2010 Author Posted February 11, 2010 RobE, that is exactly what I'm talking about with the rim of the shotshell. I'm surprised you understood that cuz after reading over it it didn't make much sense to me! But if you could gets some pictures or just tell me the sights that would be great. And the grip is foam but it has something else in the end but I just plan on putting the rim of the shotshell on something then glueing it into the base or something. I just wanted to see some pictures to see if it would be worth it. Quote
RobE Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 RobE, that is exactly what I'm talking about with the rim of the shotshell. I'm surprised you understood that cuz after reading over it it didn't make much sense to me! I'm 'paying my dues' with an 18 year old son. I can read stuff you wouldn't believe! :'( You say that it has something else in there already. Is it a plastic insert that you can pull out and see the open end of the blank? Cutting the rim off of a 12 or 16 guage hull should be easy with a fine-tooth (24 to 36 TPI) hacksaw blade. Leave about 1/8" of wall on it and take it to the bench grinder or Dremel next. Are we on the same page, yet? These sites are Non-Profit so, I think that Glenn might allow thier mention. Rodbuilding.org and rodbuildingforum.com. The latter has a cool pic gallery, Mudhole Tackle also has a board. Heck, Wally Bass Breath! If you asked nicely and Glenn approved, I have enough material laying around to do a pictoral that I could put up and do a little amatuer journalism thingy putting a rim in an EVA piece. Quote
Bassin for Walleye Posted February 12, 2010 Author Posted February 12, 2010 Alright, RobE I follow you so far and will probably just give it a shot and just put tape in the end first to make sure I like it. You don't have put the pictures up if you don't want to I'll just play around and actually the space is fairly big and might play around with other things in the end. But thantks for all the help.
