fawn2002com Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 What is the Strangest Things Used on a fish hook. I have seen people ( Especial Woman are daring ) put all sorts of things on hooks to catch everything from white bass to striper. What works for you? and, what fish did you catch. This should be very interesting to read. :-/ :-/ Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 16, 2008 Super User Posted January 16, 2008 Welcome aboard! Perhaps the "strangest" is nothing at all! During a REALLY hot bite, I have caught white bass on a bare hook. 8-) Quote
slomoe Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 when I was younger I used to go bream fishing with hotdogs. When they ran out I have used everything from gum, to grass, to a bare hook. Quote
Rob G. Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 A chunk of Ivory soap will catch channel cats. Quote
skillet Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Not real inventive when it comes to that style of fishing :-[, just wanted to say WELCOME to the forums!!! As Ever, skillet Quote
skillet Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Didn't even notice you were from the great state of TN until finished with last post That deserves at least a couple more ... As Ever, skillet Quote
Branuss04 Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 While fishing a pond that has tons and tons of 14-15 inchers, he put a peice of a sausage McMuffin on his hook and caught one with that. Quote
fawn2002com Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 Thanks for the great response. I am seeking information for an article I plan on writing for a local Magazine. What inspired this question was the lack of bites after fishing for white bass. We (being my husband and myself) are starting our fishing season now that deer hunting is over. We have a small creek shooting off the Cumberland River. We had great bites at first and fished well . But we had usual weather for January ( 74) . The next day a cold front came through sent tornados through. Now the river that is governed by an upstream dam, is up and down muddy and rough. We haven't caught a thing since then and its been 4 days. Fawn 8-) Quote
BassinWill301 Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 I once caught a Catfish and Carp on a Andy Cap Hotfry of a dock. Quote
Guest avid Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Yep.....no hook for me too. bream really like a shiny little gold hook. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted January 16, 2008 Super User Posted January 16, 2008 Bare hook, open brass swivel, gummy worm (that was a bet that I won), bream on a bank sinker he didn't let go of it until I pulled him out of the water. Allen Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Super User Posted January 17, 2008 Let me tell ya, you haven't seen anything, until you've seen a woman's pantyhose, filled with hog pellets and placed over the side of an anchored boat - for catfish chum! ;D Honest, that what we tried one night about 10 years ago. Those legs...waving in the current....pretty strange! BTW, we did catch a few cats. Not convinced the chum bag did much though Quote
BiggerWorm Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 When I was a kid, me and my friends used to fish a small creek. We discover one day, after running out of worms, that we could catch fish on flower petals we would find in the field. While not as productive as when using worms, we did catch fish. We thought we were real pioneers! Quote
Yakfish Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 20 or so feet of line wrapped around an old soda can with Now and Later candy on the hook would catch bluegills, carp and even crawfish in a nasty, polluted river I fished as a kid. I remember kids in my class telling me I was full of it when I told them about the foot long goldfish in the Mill River. None of the cowards ever came along to watch me prove it. ;D Quote
BassFishingMachine Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Strangest bait I've ever caught a fish with has to be either bare hook, or a peice of yellow grass wrapped around a hook. Caught sunnies with both these techniques, those things will hit anything. Quote
IneedAnewScreenName-rt987 Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 My son stuck a wet leaf on a bare hook, dropped it off the end of a dock, next thing you know he pulled out a 14" Rock Bass ;D Kids these days... Quote
HesterIsGod Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 my friend caught a bluegill on a French Fry. Mcdonalds i think Quote

guitarkid Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 i guess that day you could buy a bite. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted January 21, 2008 Super User Posted January 21, 2008 strangest thing ive caught a fish on would probably be a loogie that i spit on the hook. lol....bluegills eat anything. ;D Quote
JayDub Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 I once used plastic bugs I made in my "Creepy Crawler Oven" when I was a child... (kind of like soft plastics) to catch a few bream and bass. ;D lol Also, me and a friend were catching catfish on dough balls in a small pond when he decided to make a pole by tying some line on a long stick, then put a dough ball on the hook, set it in the water next to the bank, and pulled out a 2lb bass. Got to love the childhood memories... Quote
