I'm looking to buy a new chatterbait rod for the year, and am looking for a little help from those of you that have hopefully at least held or used some of these rods.  I've got it narrowed down to powell 683c, kistler magnesium ts 6'9, the falcon cara T7 6'10 MH, and finally the vendetta 6'9.  Since i live in wisconsin i haven't been able to ever put my hands on any of these rods except the vendetta and i wouldn't buy the vendetta if it was $50, just felt like junk to me.  Which would you chose out of the bunch?  Which have you used?  All opinions welcome!

I have a 7'MH Kistler Magnesium, it's labeled the "small swimbait special" but now it's called the "senko special", either way it feels a bit weak for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits, anything above 1/2oz seems to bog it down.  This may not be the case for the 6'9'' but just letting you know.  The 7'H Magnesium seems better suited for chatterbaits and spinnerbaits.  I used to have a 6'9''MH Carrot Stix which would be great for you're intended purposes but got rid of it because I found myself using my 7'MH Avid more for those intended purposes.

Why not just use your spinnerbait rod, if you have a dedicated SB rod??? It's a similar bait in a different configuration, same heavy wire hooks.

It's a realatively fast moving bait, so you don't need that much sensitivity; don't sink too much money in it !

Any decent 6-6 or 7-0 med.heavy/fast rod would do, in most peoples opinion. I preffer a something closer to a mod.fast action.

Why do I preffer mod.fast when most guy would go for fast or even Xfast ? I tried SBs on StCroix, Fenwick and Shimano rods (all true fast action) and ended up with a 66 MH BPS Graphite Series rod because of it's slower action (even though BPS labels it "fast") loaded better at casting, alowing for more accurate casts, and the number of "bumps" decreased, converting into more hook-ups. The fact that the BPS rod bends easier and deeper in the blank alowes the fish to suck in the SB, the hook ending up in the mouth of the fish. A stiffer rod would not allowe the SB to move from its trajectory into the fishes mouth when the fish follows the bait and stops at the moment of the mouth opening ( "vacuming"in the vater and the prey). The stiff rod and the continuous reeling will pull out the bait from the fishes mouth. On  an agressive bite, when the fish "drives through" the bait, it doesn't make a real difference.

It's just my opinion, and I stick with it...

The new Shimano Cumara 6'9"MH Reaction Series rod is a fantastic spinnerbait/chatterbait stick.  I've also used the powell you've mentioned and it would be a good choice as well.  Out of the two I've fished, the Cumara would definitely get my vote.

i agree with sal. if youre going to dedicate it to chatterbaits and maybe spinnerbaits.... no need to waste 200 bucks on it. id go with an all star or a shimano compre in the appropiate actions.

youll get plenty of the rod you need at the $100 price point.

What is and what ain't a decent rod gets real subjective real quick, doubly so when the subject is spinnerbait rods.  My only advice to you is to keep looking til you find one you like.  I'd never buy a rod I hadn't touched first.

I was in close to a grand before I found a spinnerbait rod I really liked.  Then I bought 6 of them.   For comparison purposes, I liked the All Star SBR2 6'8" Zell Rowland Spinnerbait rod.   All Star has since been purchased by Shakespeare, and their warrenties and customer service suck now.  That is a subject for a different rant.

Good luck findiing a spinnerbait/chatterbait rod.

if you already have a MH rod i would not spend the money for a rod to use specifically for chatterbatis. if you don't have a MH then i think for $140.00 the Powell rod, either 683 or 703 would make you happy, and you could use it for other baits too. i too think the cumara is a nicer rod but it costs quite a bit more too.

I was At BPS today looking at rods and reel and came away impressed with the "bang for buck" of the BPS products. You should be able to find one of those for $100 or less. I really like the St. Croix premier rods M-F action, light weight, quality feel.
