nralover Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Guys, my tax return is treating me much better than I thought:) What are the qualities of a great reel for flipping and pitching? I am looking for a quality one, and I can spend up to 350.00 or so if need be... Quote
Choke Canyon Boy Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 A good pitching reel needs a good lightweight spool that has a quick startup. The better spools make pitching effortless with one quick fluid motion. Good pitching reels also need a good drag with enough pressure to get those fish out of that cover before they wrap you up. The best reel I have for pitching is my Revo Premier followed closely by my Curado e5. Both of these reels are super high quality with the above mentioned qualities. Quote
Bronzefly Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Nice budget! You'll be able to get a SWEET reel for that kind of coin! A few things I like in a pitching reel... High IPT/Ratio - 7:1 Smooth Retrieve Quality Drag Ability to pitch a range of baits well A flipping reel really only needs to hold line and have a strong drag. There are a bunch of great reels in your price range. I like the Chronarch D7 a lot! I actually like it better than the 100 size Core reels. The Daiwa Zillion 100SHA is also a fine reel for pitching, although in stock form, not quite as good with the lighter stuff as a Chronarch D7. Do you have a preference - RH/LH, Daiwa, Shimano? Quote
Madd Lunacy Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 It needs to be light, powerful and shimano. You can get a shimano core 100mg flipping version for 295-300 brand new on ebay it retails for 379 i think. I have one and love it. Quote

Sorry- I wasn't bragging. Uncle Sam just didn't hurt me as bad as I figured. I have no brand preference, but I like left hand retrieve on all my reels. I have heard the Castaic is a great reel for this, and it seems reasonably priced, but as I said I'd spend the extra if it was necessary... Quote
Bronzefly Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 No need to apologize!! I think it's great and am happy you can get yourself a high end reel. I also prefer LH reels for pitching/flipping. I have owned both the older and newer castaic models. While they perform very well, they are large and clunky and not comfortable in my hands. I have fairly large hands and like to palm the reel and the castaic just didn't feel right to me. I still go back to the Chronarch 101D7. I have a couple that I pitch with and really enjoy this reel. nralover Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 Sounds good:) What about the Daiwa reels? Is the Zillion worth a look? Quote
Fat-G Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Sounds good:) What about the Daiwa reels? Is the Zillion worth a look? Yes. Quote
Super User Catt Posted February 2, 2010 Super User Posted February 2, 2010 Some thing that's as solid as an anvil, as versatile as a pair of Channel Lock Pliers & as dependable as Winchester 30/30 Quote
Bronzefly Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Sounds good:) What about the Daiwa reels? Is the Zillion worth a look? Heck yeah! The zillions are well built machines for sure. I really like the 50th model for pitching, but the standard 100SHLA would do a fine job for you. They pop up in the flea market from time to time at great prices! Quote

Can be had on ebay for with a lot of dough left over. Quote
Cavfirst Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 SMOOTH as buttermilk and a rock solid drag makes an awesome pitchin reel Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted February 3, 2010 Super User Posted February 3, 2010 2 different subjects. For flippin, all a reel has to do is hold line. Pitching is a different story. There are lots of reels out there that will meet your needs. Go to Bass Pro or some place that has lots of choices and find the one that fits your hand the best. Me, I like round reels over low profile reels, a couple of buddies have opposite opinions. I used to use a Calcutta. It worked great. Then I upgraded to the Calcutta 200 TEGT. The 11 ball bearings are a signficant upgrade that will extend your pitching range alot. My advice is to find the one that fits our hand the best. Quote
fishinflip415 Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I'd go with the chronarch d. I have one that I pitch and flip with and I agree with b-fly. The reel feels more solid than the core 100mg. Quote
zero Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 ardent f-700 i have that really good because it has 22 lbs of drag and it is desgined for flipping Quote
sal669 Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 You can Flip with any reel that has a solid drag. I am using a Zillion (7:1) for pitching and love it. Quote
trevor Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Tackle tour like the Diawa Luna better. Some thing that's as solid as an anvil, as versatile as a pair of Channel Lock Pliers & as dependable as Winchester 30/30 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 3, 2010 Super User Posted February 3, 2010 I love it when people take Tackle Tour reviews as gospel. Personally, all I care about with a reel for flipping is that its solid, has a strong drag, and the handle is on the left. For pitching, I want the same, but add fast spool start up to the mix. Smoothness, brakes, even gear ratio make much of a difference, though I like it to be a bit faster. Note the two reels in front, right: Quote
