Sherlock 60 Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 I am going to get a BPS Pro Qualifier reel for medium and deep cranking. Should I get the 4.7:1 gear ratio model or the 5.2:1? It will be for a MH 7' cranking rod and crankbaits that run 10+ feet (such as the Strike King Series 5 and 6, Norman DD22, Fat Free Shad BD7, etc). Quote
Sherlock 60 Posted February 1, 2010 Author Posted February 1, 2010 The Revo Winch has a 5.4:1 ratio, so shouldn't the 5.2:1 PQ be adequate? Quote
Super User KYntucky Warmouth Posted February 1, 2010 Super User Posted February 1, 2010 5.2 should be fine, I would go for the lower only if you are throwing 16+ for extended periods of time. Quote
BucketBuster Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 Honestly, I don't think the 2" in line recovery between the 4.7:1 and 5.2:1 will make a huge difference. I use the Winch all of the time for my deep divers and if I need to slow the lure down, I slow my retrieve. The 5.4:1 gear ratio has been more than adequate for me for every crankbait presentation. kikstand454 Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 ? :-? again.... the reason for using a lower ratio reel for deep cranking is for torque... not really for speed. you can speed up and slow down a retreive with any reel. you are going to hate life at the end of the day if you throw a 15'+ crank on a 7.1 reel. I'm more concerned about the reel choice than the ratio. From what I have read in many places on this site the PQ is a fine reel for the money. My reels are mostly in the $85-$110 range, with the Daiwa Exceler being the cheapest reel I use ($65 range). So far my Shimano(4), ABU Garcia (8), and Daiwa (2) reels have served me very well. Considering that I will be using the PQ for maybe 10-15% of my fishing, it would be foolish of me to spend much more on a reel for deep cranking. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted February 1, 2010 Super User Posted February 1, 2010 In every thread where BPS has come up NewKidInTown has been very clear in his disdain for all things Basspro. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but you asked about reel speed. The 5.2:1 at 21 IPT would be my choice. Quote

I have had them for a long while and have had no problems with any of the reels! They cast just as far as my brand name reels. So maybe you can come down off your high horse and join the rest of us! Not anything like my Steez reels but I think they are good value for the $$$. Quote

Doesn't pay to buy something that is not going to do what you need it to do. You guys should know better. Quote

What I do know is that the two Pro Qualifier reels I have, and use regularly, are excellent reels, both casting and retrieving. I also know that you seem to have missed learning how to disagree without be disagreeable. There is no need to be insulting. One last thing: The original poster asked a specific question about reel speed. He did not ask for your opinion of Basspro reels. Quote
Koop Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 PQ's are solid reels, I used them for several years before I upgraded. I still have 1 and it serves its purpose well. A 5.x:1 ratio reel is fine for deep cranking. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted February 1, 2010 Super User Posted February 1, 2010 When comparing reels, use inches per turn (IPT), not gear ratios. Personally, I don't like really slow reels, or super fast reels. I think my cranking reels are 23 IPT, and that seems to work fine. Quote

Super User Goose52 Posted February 1, 2010 Super User Posted February 1, 2010 I will be buying a 5.2:1 PQ for deep cranking (hopefully they will go on sale for $80 during the Spring Classic). Quote

Funny, Ive been using baitcasters for around 10 years! I have had a wide variety of curados, few different types of quantums. I had a diawa tda. I like my pq and pro lites better. My pro lites cast 1/4oz cranks just fine! I have never had any problems with them ever! Your ignorance astounds me! Quote

Drooling so much over that page in the catalog that you can't see the photo of it anymore! Now you can go next month and buy something else you've been dying to get. You did the right thing. Quote
