NewAngler Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 I'm having some issues as of late with two of my reels. Same problem, different reels, and I dont know if it's user error or not. After I cast, ON OCCASION, I will crank the handle and nothing will happen, at all, the line eye of the reel with move, but the spool will not. Does anyone know why, or more importanly, does anyone know how to correct this issue? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 1, 2010 Super User Posted February 1, 2010 I'd have to start with a complete cleaning before I'd even try to diagnose the issue. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 I suggest a clean and lube including inspection and diagnosis. Let me know if we can help you out. PM or include your BassResource.com user name for 10% discount. Thanks, Mike Quote
VABasser Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 Is the thumb bar popping back up when you crank like it should? When is the last time you cleaned it or had it cleaned? Quote
NewAngler Posted February 1, 2010 Author Posted February 1, 2010 The thumb bar does click back up, but looks like I'm going to be having them cleaned soon, as they are two of my favorite reels. Know of any local spots, va? Quote
VABasser Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 Hmm hard for me to say what it might be without being able to look at it firsthand and take it apart. I've done some troubleshooting with mine over the years so have learned a thing or two. I clean mine with help from Reel Mech's book. Saves a lot of money. So can't help you with local places but I'm sure some of the NoVA crew has some suggestions if you plan on sending/taking it somewhere to be cleaned Quote
ib_of_the_damned Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 I have the same problem with my Abu Garcia Silver Max. Every now and then the thumb bar will not reengage but the crank turns and the level-wind goes back and forth. The spool stays still. I have taken my reel apart for oiling and tried to figure out what was happening but couldn't figure it out. Quote
b.Lee Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 I hope everything is alright? haha u said u have reel(real) problems. Quote

opie Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 This happens a lot to me with my revo sx. It started when I began wearing a glove on my left hand for cold weather. I finally figured out that I was keeping the thumb bar from coming all the way back up with the base of the thumb of my left hand (right hand retrieve) as I first turn the handle after a cast. If this is the case you will be able to engage the spool by manually pushing the thumb bar up the rest of the way. Quote
Revo_Carrot Stix Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 I'm seeing a lot of Abu Garcia postings here...Same thing happened to my Revo Premier after 6 months...took it back to BPS and got it exchanged for a new one. Sporatically, the reel wouldn't fully disengage (or is it engage? ) after a cast. I'd reel and nothing would happen. It ticks me off that I had to manually-do-anything (except maintenance) to cast a reel in that price range, but BPS took care of it. I still don't know the problem, nor do guys @ the reel counter. I hope I don't see a pattern here.... Quote

farmpond1 Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Are you using braided line? It may be "ghost drag" where the spool is actually turning but the "clump" of braided line is not. It only looks like the spool isn't turning. (It's very deceptive). If so, it's an easy fix. Strip off the braided line and back it with some monofilament or tape the braided line to the spool. p.s., This pointer was given to me when I had "ghost drag" and I'm paying it forward. Hope it helps. Quote

Hope it helps. I wish this was the case. BUt it isnt. I have braid on there now, but the problem originated when I had mono on it, and I always tape my line on the spool. Looks like a trip to the doctor should fix it right up. And neither are a Revo. Quote
