Jake P Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 I have never used a frog before and figured i would try it out. I have read reviews and alot of people trash them becuase they say after a few casts it starts retaining water and doesnt float, or the nose rips off. Can anyone recommend some frogs that are worth buying? Quote
BassFishingMachine Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 Well from the way you talked Im guessing your talking about a hollow bodied frog. Just try out the Original Scumfrog (Non-popper version) and you won't be disappointed. They float great, and give pretty darn good hook up ratios. Just cast it in the thickest of slop, and thickest of lillypads and slowly work it along with small twitches and constant pauses. Trust me, if fished in these types of cover it'll produce results. Only hollow frog Ive had that ever gave me a problem regarding floating was the Spro Bronzeye, some do float and work well, and others don't, its like taking a 50 50 when buying one, and there too expensive for me to be taking that risk. Terry_ Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 The origanal scum frog is my choice. I cut one of the legs(skirts) about a 1/2" shorter than the other to make it easier for me to acheive a walk-the -dog action. Very productive for me in midsummer in nasty stuff where the fish go to hunt for shade. Quote
skillet Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 I was thinking about getting one of the Bronzeye frogs this Spring. BFM have you heard of any others haveing the same problems with them. Nice little chunk of change for only 50/50 chance of getting a good one ... As Ever, skillet Quote

Jake P Posted January 20, 2008 Author Posted January 20, 2008 what kind of rod is best for topwaters and frogs? Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted January 20, 2008 Super User Posted January 20, 2008 what kind of rod is best for topwaters and frogs? dont wanna sound like a smart*ss, but a frog rod. lol they make rods designed for frogs. ive never researched frog rods so i couldnt reccomend one to you, but if you wanted to get serious about frogging, a frog rod and some 30-50lb braided line would be a good investment. Micropterus salmoides Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 Jake_P, Check out the Dobyns 735C. After doing quite a bit of research that is the rod I'm purchasing for frogs. I normally use G Loomis rods, but I found too many unfavorable reviews of their Frog Rod on several forums. The Dobyns 735C works for frogs, pitchin' jigs & worms, and small swimbaits. I can't wait to get mine. As far as frogs I've done really well with the Snag Proof Pro Series Tournament Frog. I want to try the Snag Proof Bobby's Perfect Frog, which I've heard is great for walking in open water. I too have heard about the Spro Bronzeye Frog filling with water and sinking. There have been reports of inconsistencies with the plastic. Some are soft and compressible and others are harder. It's too bad there are quality control issues. If you get a good one they are one of the best on the market. Quote
tipptruck1 Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 I use the sang proof ones. They take on water from time to time. I really haven't had any luck fishing them in cover. But I have the best luck running them in open water. Quote
Korea_Bassin Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 Here's a good scum frog kit that I've had for a while and haven't been disappointed with. They float well, and it includes both a "walk the dog" and popper type frog in multiple colors for not a bad price, although you may find it cheaper elsewhere. http://www.cabelas.com/prod-1/0000731115725a.shtml Here's another style that I've seen good reviews of but haven't fished. http://www.cabelas.com/prod-1/0043853121953a.shtml Good luck. BARON49_Northern NY Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 Snag Proof Tournament Frogs are my #1 choice for a frog that holds up well and catches big fish out of the nastiest of stuff. The worse the cover is the better this frog produces. It holds up much better then the SPRO frog and does not need any tweaking like the SPRO frog does. I fish this on an American Rodsmiths 7" H, Revo reel and 65 lb Power pro line. For open water and edges I like a Ribbit, using a 7'3'' MH St. Croix Legends rod, Revo reel and 50 lb Pro pro.... Quote
Super User RoLo Posted January 20, 2008 Super User Posted January 20, 2008 I've yet to find "one" hollow frog that doesn't take on water eventually. For walking-the-dog, my favorite frog has been the "Boze ZZ Walker", but it too eventually takes on water > Roger Quote
