Super User Chris at Tech Posted January 16, 2008 Super User Posted January 16, 2008 For those of you who have fished the Mattlures Bluegills... Any reason to add or not add a treble hook to the hook eye on the bottom of the body? Quote
Super User T-rig Posted January 16, 2008 Super User Posted January 16, 2008 If you're fishing it on the bottom I wouldn't add a treble. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted January 16, 2008 Super User Posted January 16, 2008 I never use a treble. Quote
crankybaits Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 i dont use a treble just because I'm afraid of losing the bait. That being said I did lose a fish that i was fighting for a couple of minutes. A treble might have helped. I have thought about putting some of those lure retriever split rings on with a treble. Super User Bassn Blvd Posted January 17, 2008 Super User Posted January 17, 2008 I just got my 1st swimbait Bluegill the other day and got slammed on my 1st outing with it. Do you guys use braid or mono on your swimbaits? Quote

Al Wolbach Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 I fish this bait on humps and deep points on the bottom. I added a treble hook to the bottom of the bait and have not had any hang up problems, however I do bury one point of the treble hook into the bait, leaving two points exposed. This bait rest on the bottom in a nose down attitude not flat like many other swim baits. Hope this helps. I use floro.....20lb.......................Al Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted January 17, 2008 Super User Posted January 17, 2008 I use 20lb Pline mono when I cast the bluegill, 25-30lb mono when I am sightfishing with it. There is no reason to fight a fish for longer than about 30 seconds when swimbait fishing. Quote
foul hooked Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Hey 4bizz, Why the heavier line when you are site fishing? Just curious, I know zip about site fishing or swim baits. Thanks. Quote
Super User fourbizz Posted January 17, 2008 Super User Posted January 17, 2008 I just like the way that the bluegill casts and fishes on the 20lb a lot more. but on a bed casting distance and feel don't matter. so with big fish and a heavy rod in real close quarters, i'm just more confident with heavy line. Lucky Craft Man Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Could you or does anyone fish the bluegill or any other swimbait on braid? Quote
bpm2000 Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 sure why couldnt you? just be prepared for the trade-offs that come with braid. Quote

(I've never used braid) Like if the braid digs in on itself on a cast, the line could snap and send your $20 bluegill across the lake Happened to me, but thankfully with a $3 Storm swimbait. Lesson learned. Quote
