Fuego supertuning

i recently purchased a diawa fuego, and was intrested in things i could do to it as far as supertuning. if any one could give me some incite on what's available. thanks

Super tunning in a budget:

1 st step.- drag upgrade ---> Carbontex drag

2 nd step.- spool upgrade ---> TDZ 103 Spool

With those two you 'll have a mean fishing machine.

Got more money ?

3 rd step.- spool supporting bearings upgrade

4 th step.- Handle upgrade ---> TDZ handle

It 's gonna feel almost like a TDZ

Got more to spend ?

5 th step.- Handle upgrade ---> carbon fiber handle

6 th step.- Spool upgrade ---> Steez 103/100 Spool

It 's going to cast like a TDZ Type R+

Those are just parts upgrades...supertuning means much more than just premium parts.

Having done a ton of upgrades on Daiwa reels older and newer.

Like J Francho stated, super tuning is actually a cleaning/polishing process best used on older reels (2000 or earlier) with fixed one piece spool shafts that actually run through the cast control bushing/bearings.

The only thing that can be done to the Fuego is upgrades like Raul indicated..

If I were to tune a Fuego for lighter line fishing these are the upgrades I would do:

1.- Upgrade the drag, not that the drag on the Fuego is rubbish, but I would like to have a smoother more fluid and responsive drag ---> Carbontex drag washers.

2.- Spool upgrade, I mentioned TDZ103 spool, scratch that one from the list, write down TDZ105 spool, that spool is meant for 8 -10 lb test, spool 6-8 pound test Hybrid and you are in business.

I 've got the TDZ105H and it casts the light stuff almost like the Pixy does, I 've also got the TDZ103H, drop in the 105 spool and imediately becomes the TDZ105H, all the magic is in the spool  .

The handle upgrade ? you want it but not really "need" it, the reel is pretty smooth with the stock handle.

So for about 100 dollars you get the upgrades that will turn the Fuego into a lightweight fishing machine.

I'm sure those upgrades would help, but why not just get the tool designed for the purpose?  A Sol does finesse straight out of the box.  Of course, do some upgrades to it, and its even better.  You're just playing catch up with the Fuego, making a square peg fit in a round hole.

Cuz he got the Fuego for a ridiculous price, purchasing the spool and doing the drag upgrade is going to cost him just about the same than what a Sol is worth, instead of having one reel just by changing the spool it 's like having two reels.

Right now I 'm finesse fishing with my Fuego/TDZ105H spool ..... dang ! I need heavier line >, remove the TDZ spool and drop in the original Fuego spool, voilá, ready to power fish

I do that all the time with my Chronarchs 50Mg, all I do is to swap the spool and right away it gives the reel another dimension.

A great part of how the reel casts and what it can cast is in the spool.

I understand Francho 's arguments, if I were to purchase a reel for finesse fishing I would purchase a Sol, it 's designed for that, but the case here is that our friend purchased a Fuego ( at 132 dollars @ TW  it 's a no brainer deal ), the Fuego is not the greatest light bait caster and he wants it also for finesse fishing, well we got the reel already so let 's find a solution that will fit his desires, the Fuego does not cast light baits very well but the TDZ105H does and I know that the greater part of the magic is in the spool, since the spool is compatible with the "trouble" reel reelwise then it 's only a matter of swapping spools.

Let 's do some math:

$132 reel + around $80 for the spool + around $30 ( RM can give a more accurate estimation ) for the drag upgrade = $242.

Sol MSRP = $250

1.- Right now purchasing a Sol is more expensive than purchasing a Fuego plus the cost of upgrades

2.- You purchase a Sol and this is what you won 't get:

Clicking drag star

Cold forged handle

Larger line guide

4 extra inches in the IPT

The added versatility of having a spool for finesse fishing and another for power fishing.

There are other retailers selling the Sol for nearly as inexpensive.  My local Gander had them at $140 recently.  They also have Zillions at $187, Stradic MG at $130, and few other good deals.

Yes, let's do some math....I agree, he's got it, so put it to use, but he'll need a good rod.  Personally, I'd rather spend that money on a decent rod rated to throw lighter baits, as that is a bigger function in finesse than the reel.  So called "finesse reels" just make it easier to cast light baits.

well i have a st croix legend ML dropshot rod i guess i should have threw that in their if it will help with the reel tuning process this is the first reel i have ever wanted to upgrade

I'd just fish the thing as is.  Once you are comfortable,and can cast the light stuff, do each incremental upgrade,so you realize its full effect.  One thing I'd do as SOP is go with Carbontex drag washers.  That's a no brainer for any reel.

Im bout to send one of my fuegos off for supertuning. Im gettin the carbontex drag, spool bearing upgrade, polishing of internal parts, worm shaft spacer and collar, and of course having the bearings lubed properly. Also sending my pixy to the same guy for pixilla upgrades. I wouldnt bother spending money on a new spool for the fuego tho, thats goin overboard imo. To each their own tho. It already casts light stuff a mile out of the box.

i have a couple of fuego reels, and would love to have the option of the tdz spools. however, i'm having a hard time finding them for sale anywhere. are they available anywhere other than Daiwa? if so please let me know where to buy.

not to hyjack the thread but im curious to know the advantages of having a "Pixilla" over a Steez.
