St. Croix rods...?

thinking about gettin a St. Croix rod, but can't decide on gettin a premier or a avid. Does anybody recommend either one of these rods? Any advice is welcome, good or bad.

Most will recommend the Avid over the Premiere for good reason. Their generally lighter and more sensitive. The mojo's are built off premiere blanks it's been said, and are mostly made in Mexico. While premiers are made in the USA. Although it's also been mentioned Mojo demand has been so high they have had to use some of their US factories to make them as well. So basically get a avid is what you will mostly hear. My one exception to that is the 6'6 fiberglass cranking rod they make in the premiere line. I have one and LOVE IT! I've literally yet to have a fish throw a crank with it.

I have four Avids and two Legend Elite. Maybe that

makes me a St. Croix fan! Get the Avid series, they

are fine rods. The components are top grade, the

craftsmanship is outstanding and the company

prides itself in quality control (an issue with some

of their offshore manufacturing). Also, "Made in the USA".

I have 2 Avids and 2 Premiers.  Both are fine rods, but I tend to pick up the Avids more times than not.  Like others have stated, Avids are lighter, more sensitive, and have superior components.  You will not be disappointed with either.

I have two Avids and a Triumph (same blank as the Premier and Mojo, but made in China) and like them so much that I'm going to get rid of a couple of my other rods so I can pick up another Avid and a Mojo or Premier.

They're light, sensitive, and feel better in my hand than my Shimano Crucial and Johnny Morris Signature Series rods.

My only complaint is the fact that certain length/power/action combinations are not offered in all series. For example, I intend to pick up a 6'9" ML/XF spinning rod for floating/Trick Worms, (where sensitivity isn't important) but I'm not a big fan of split grip rods. Unfortunately, SC only offers that rod in their Legend Extreme ($350 - split grip), Legend Tournament Bass ($230 - split grip), Avid ($180 - full grip), and Mojo ($100 - split grip) lines. I don't see spending $180 for a technique-specific rod where sensitivity isn't an issue just because it has a full grip. It would be nice to see that length/action/power in the Premier series, especially since it's the same blank as the Mojo, or even the Triumph series since they're now built in the same plant in Mexico.

I don't know what you're currently fishing with, but odds are you'll be happy with whatever St. Croix you decide on. That said, I'd take an Avid over a Premier if you can swing the extra $60.

Avid, but you definitely wont be bad off with a Premier if the avid is not in your budget.

I have a couple of the Premieres and 4 Avids.  Great rods for the money and top notch customer service and support.

I own an Avid and a Triumph. The Avid is obviously better but the Triumph is no slouch. The only thing I can add is the Avid is a lifetime warranty, the Premier is 5 years.

St. Croix is an excellent company to deal with.

have you fished with the Mojo? im getting used to the grip but still dont like the balance. im wondering if the Legend is better.

I've never had more than three fishing rods (sounds a bit weird to most of you, I know). I've had a Premier 6'6" medium power spinning rod since 2003; it has been my workhorse rod that I use the most. Looking back, I do wish I spent a few bucks more for an Avid, given how long I keep the rods. The Avid is definitely a better, lighter, more sensitive rod. The lifetime warranty should be the clincher if you're looking to buy. However, I should point out that my Premier is still working just fine.

thanks for all the info an advice guys. I think I'm gonna wait a little longer and save a little more money an go w/ the Avid. I mean I'm not gonna be buyin another rod for a good while so why not go all out right.

I am a big St. Croix fan, the Mojo's are good rods...........and yes some of the rods withing the Mojo line are hard to beat for the price...........but others are dogs, and IMHO not worth the price.

Back to the orginal post, I currently own 6 St Croix Rods, (1 Mojo, 3 Avids, and 2 Legend Tournaments), and just recently owned as many as 14 at one time.

Personaly, I don't like St Croix's H power rods.......while they are quite a bit more powerfull than most others H rods, you also pay for it with weight and balance issues. I had this power and action in 4 differant series , Mojo, Premier, Avid , and Legend Tournament. The Mojo and premier were totally unaccetable for me, way to tip heavy and just plain uncofortable to fish. The Avid was lighter, but still not great, and IMHO just too much rod for bass fishing , these things are broom sticks. The LT was acceptable in weight, but balance was still an issue, and was basicly a "lighter broomstick" I own none of these rods anymore.

I also am not a big fan of there M power spinning rods, they tend to be a tad bit more powerfull than I like for light line/small bait rods. They don't really load up well with small stuff, and don't have enough give to kep from having problems with small hooks and light line (8lb test and less) I would rather use a casting setup for what there M spinnging rods are rated for. And yes I formed this opinion based on actual use, I owned several St Croix M spinning rods that saw alot of use over the last 5 years............so I gave them a chance. The only M power spinning rod I kept, and actualy love is my 6' M Avid, that thing is a dock skipping machine, and thats where I want a little more power in a spinning rod.

I also do not like there crankbait rods, while most of there rods seem to be over powered in there rating,the cranking rods are not, and IMHO seem to be the oposite, under powered. I had a 7' MH Moderate Mojo Cranking rod, rated from 3/8- 1 oz. The rod was fine for cranks in the lower end of it rating, like Strike King series 4S's or Red Eye Shads, but put a Series 6, DT16, Fat Free Shad or a DD22 on and those baits really over powered the rod. Not what I was expecting or looking for.

Now to the rods I like, there 6'6" and 7' Medium Power/Fast action casting rods. I own 2 6'6" M's, one Mojo, and one Legend Tournament and one 7' M, also a Legend Tournament. These rods are powerfull enough to fish plastics and jigs around light to moderate cover, but also fish treble hooked baits very well, so well that I don't see any need for a special "cranking" rods. I like to toss topwaters,jerkbaits, shallow/mid depth cranks (sub surface all the way up to DT 10's, and everything inbetween) 3/16, 1/4, 5/16 oz. spinnerbaits, jigs, and T-rigs, 1/4 and 1/2 oz lipless cranks, bubba shotting in moderate cover, the 7'er also make a nice "finesse" C-rig rod. They are great Senko and weightless plastic rods, and the I also toss larger shaky heads with them, Thes are my go to "all purpose" rods, and I really like them.

I also like the 7' MH/fast rods as well (I have an Avid), Almost all the power I need in a bass rod (save for really heavy grass mats and slop) I toss some treble hooked baits on this rod like, 3/4 oz lipless crankbaits and small hard swimbaits and hollow boddy swimbaits. 3/8, 1/2, and 3/4 oz Spinnerbaits, jigs, texas -rigs, c-rigs,bigger 6" and 7" senkos, pretty much the upsized versions of what I use the 7' M for.

Last but not least my drop shot/finesse spinning rod, a 7 ML/Fast Avid. I think this is a close tie for my favorite rod ( w/the 7' M/fast LT casting) Handles all my light line work perfectly, has just enough tip for flining small baits a mile, and cushioning big fish on lite line, but plenty of power for hooks sets, and bringing 6lb Smallmouth up form 40' of water on Lake Erie.

Yeah I have an opinion on a few of there rods.

Keep an eye on the Flea Market and I'm sure you'll find one that'll meet your wants and wallet.  And you won't have to wait as long....but that's coming from a guy that doesn't mind buy used.
