I was really impressed with the St. Croix Avids. They were REALLY light and felt extremely sensitive. I checked out the BuCoos, which I really didn't like, the Compre 7' MXF felt tip heavy, and the Mojos were tip heavy as well.

I also held a BPS Extreme, which I was suprisingly impressed with.

I then headed to Greentop. I thought the Lowriders and Cara T7's were impressive too.

But the biggest suprise to me was the Shimano Clarus. All of them were extremely light weight and perfectly balanced.

I didn't get to hold a Powell though (705c). Anyone have any thoughts on their weight?

As discussed in many threads - the BPS products seem to be controversial with both passionate naysayers AND supporters. However, the Extremes on closeout right now on-line seem to be a good value at $59. I just got in 2 more yesterday.

A fun fact: I now have both a G. Loomis 7' MF casting rod (GLX MBR842C), and a BPS Extreme 7' MF - the Loomis rod weighs 125 grams, the Extreme weighs 152 - a 27 gram difference. So, the Loomis weighs about 18% less but it also cost nearly 5 times more than the Extreme... I hope it's 5 times as sensitive !

For the $$$, the Clarus is a pretty decent rod..under rated imo...had mine for about 7 mos..I take it on every trip.. ;)

Now you're talking Fat-G. 8-) We all love to talk about tackle, and what's best and it is a great way to learn, but the only way to really find out if you like a rod (or reel) is to check it out for yourself. BPS, Cabelas, and most other tackle shops will let you put the reel of your choice on any rod they have to check how it feels, balances, etc. Good luck.

And if you like the Clarus, wait till you sample the Compre.  Honestly though I'm torn between them.  Save money or go for even lighter weight and more sensitivity.   :-/

He said he didn't care for the compre, tip heavy.

If the BPS sells the Kistler Magnesium rods, The 7'H Kistler has almost the exact same feel as the 704c Powell, there is a difference in the two but it's subtle.  I would venture to say the 705c is close to the 7'XH Magnesium.

You have a 705c right? Does it feel tip heavy? Keep in mind I'll put either a Citica or a Tierra on it, which basically weigh the same. Thanks!

I have a Curado 200e7 on mine and it's a pretty good feeling combo.  I mean it's not the lightest rod ever made but paired with curado it can be fished all day, no problem.

I went to BPS a couple years ago with the intention of buying a 6'6" MH Compre casting rod, but after handling it in person I wound up leaving with a pair of Extremes instead.

Dollar for dollar, I feel the Extremes are a better deal than the Compre, but I'm not overly impressed by the ones I've handled and owned. They're decent rods at that price point, and well worth their sale price, but I wouldn't pay full price for them.

I've owned the 6'6" MH/F Woo Daves "Worm" casting rod, the 7' MH/F casting rod, and the 6'9" ML/F Woo Daves dropshot spinning rod and the only one that I'd consider buying again would be the dropshot rod. Imo, it has the perfect tip for floating worms and weightless Trick Worms.

FWIW, the St. Croix 'Triumph' runs about the same price as the Extreme's sale price, offer a better warranty, and are more sensitive.

"Light" is way overrated, "balanced" is the key!

Great point !

I put my 18 oz. avet mxj on a star handicraft rod and the balance makes this feel as it's the lightest I own.

Conversely I put my shimano spheros 8000 on the same star rod spinning version and it sucked so I returned the rod and bought a shimano tallus, way better marriage.

As I posted in another thread - I had to try at least ONE high-end rod to see what all the fuss is about. The Loomis is a nice rod, but I still like my Extremes (especially on a value for dollar standpoint) ...

Well said. RW we don't always agree on tackle, but on this we are in complete accord. 8-)

The extreme xps rods are on clearance thru the BPS fall angler catalog for 69 dollars and for the money cannot be beat. If u go to the store and show them the catalog they will give u the sale price. I have a few of them and they arent far behind my st croix avid. They are very light and fairly balanced. Im upgrading to all GLX rods so my gf will be gettin my st croix 7 foot mh casting rod as well as one of my xps extremes. She loves bass fishing as much as me and no shes not a hillbilly haha
