Hey all you jig fisherman out there!

How thick do you like your jig skirts?

Besides color and what it's made out of (round rubber, silicone, etc.), what do you look for in a skirt?

I like compact skirts on the bulkier side for flipping jigs, nothing too crazy.  I think of the skirt as trailer accent on my lighter ones, just there to add a little flair and body...but mostly relying on a craw trailer.

I'm curious because I went to a fishing expo this weekend and saw a lot of hand tied stuff.  This got me thinking, what are these guys thinking?  There was a large spread in quality and thickness of the skirts with the little guys.  The big guys are different too.

Here is a jig x, which looks to me to have a pretty bulky skirt.

And this is the evolution flipping series.  Which looks thinner but with a large profile.

A penny for your thoughts

I prefer a thin skirt on all my jigs.  I have found that in a tank that a thick skirt a lot of the strands stick together and look very unnatural.  On the other side a thinner skirt gives a lot of action and natural movements.  I typically tie all my skirts with around 30 strands and that is only one length of the jig as I do not believe in the double lengths.  They work for me in all my fishing, and I can go behind guys in a tournament that are fishing with "production jigs" and catch fish after fish.

That's my $.02.

Take care,

Steve

The bigger and bushier the better. IMHO

For my flipping/heavier Jigs (anything from 3/16-3/8ounce) I like to have a decent amount of strands and be fairly bulky. Although with my finesse Jigs (1/16ounce-1/8ounce) I like to be less bulky and a little less strands.

Most of my jigs are 3/8 oz & larger; the bulkier the better

Around 60 or so strands.  I also like to have some strands longer than others.

Muddy or water with clarity under 3' I go with a very bulky silicone skirted jig, clearer water I go for a more finesse style and they also usually have living rubber and silicone mixed.
